I am considering SORN-ing my car next winter as I don't seem to use it very much (winter or summer in fact). Can anybody let me know what implications there are for doing this.
1. Does the insurance qoute come down considerably?
2. Will it be ok left outside (on driveway) with a cover?
3. What maintence do I need to consider - battery etc (presumably atleast disconnect)?

If the costs are marginal then I will not bother also if it's not wise leaving it outside I will not bother - but as it's hardly driven and left outside anyway then this is not a big consideration presumably.

If it has to stand outside, covered or not, the brake discs will be as rusty as an old horse shoe by the time you want to use it and the battery will have gone flat, disconnected or not. The tyres don't like being sat in one place in the wet.

In short - if its not stored in a warm dry garage you will be best of using it! Leaving it outside over winter will probably cost you more than you'll save.

My E46 320d has been parked outside my parents' house in sun, rain and snow for the last year. It passed it's MOT today needing only replacements for the corroded rear brake lines (a common problem with 3 series BMWs that develops over years not months).

My Zed and Westfield on the other hand are tucked up safe and dry in their garage :wink:
 
Insurance won't change! Only cost saving is petrol and tax.

Mine is currently SORN in my garage! Tyres pumped up to 50bar, optimate charger on the battery, handbrake off, left in gear & covered.

I'm desperate to drive it and give it a blast... Well not in the current climate!! It's been off the road for a few months now :(

N.b my zed is a summer toy only! :)

Apart from the SORN - Ditto!
luckily I've got more appropriate cars for the winter months :thumbsup:
 
I wouldn't say a warm garage is a good idea. I fact it could be fatal to a lot of components. If you give the car a good clean water gets into every nuc and cranny. The putting it in a warm garage accelerates corrosion add that to a cover that will insulate the car.

Best bet is to have a car port with a cover or a garage that isn't heated or attached to the house with good circulation for storage.

I agree that a warm garage is not necessarily a good idea if the car is put away wet and muddy - but if the car gets put away when its clean and dry I cant see the problem - Its like putting it back in the showroom!
 
I'd have thought as long as it is well ventilated, even if warm then any damp air shouldn't linger

I normally put mine back on the road beginning of March. Unless this weather get better that won't be happening.
 
After the hailstone the other week and the *interesting times* I had going round a roundabout I'm thinking of garaging mine also.
