SORN?

Not really a newbie but wasn't sure where better to post this....
My Z4 isn't my primary car & I guess I'm not the only one here in that boat. In the current climate I don't see me using (let alone needing) my Z4 anytime soon so I'm wondering about SORNing it. Just wondering if folks here have any practical advice, issues to watch for etc? For example does NCB expire? And when you come to "unSORN" in which sequence to address MOT / tax / insurance? Would dearly love to keep it registered in the hope that an excuse to take it out might come along but realistically I guess I may as well try to save a few hundred quid if that isn't gonna happen for a few months :(

If you SORN your car it just means you’re not taxing the car to use on the road as it’s being kept off road. You’d get a cheque in the post for any remaining full months of tax.

A SORN has no connection to insurance / MOT although don’t forget you’ll most likely want your car insured for fire and theft at a minimum even in storage.

Am thinking of doing the same and making the Zed SORN. Seems no point paying for the tax when it’s still snoozing in the garage.

We did this on 30th March to 2 of our other cars and now have only one tax free car on the road, got the cheque today.

ditto , my m c was sorned at beginning of dec , but due tono work under lockdown ,I sorned two vans on 30th march and got two cheques in the post today. 360 quid, feels like I moved a couple of pianos without leaving home. Will re tax as soon as we can start up again. Great automated system, simple and speedy , top marks dvla 👍

I declared mine SORN on March 31st. Refund hasn't arrived yet but should do very soon.

Unless you can make insurance savings by taking it off the road, you might as well keep yours taxed until the end of this month, just on the off chance that a change means that you're able to drive it.

I SORN’d mine on the 31st as well, it only had a Month left but £30 is better in my pocket than the Government, you’re too late to benefit this month so give it t another 3 weeks and see if there are any changes/relaxing of the current guidelines, you need to keep it insured and MOT’s due from April have been given a 6 Month extension.

Me too. I SORN'd mine on March 30th & I'd only just taxed it at the beginning of March after it being SORN'd for 4 months over the winter. Insurance stays running as normal & my MOT was due on April 19th. I'd already booked it in to be done at my local indy but then I rang them to cancel now I've got 6 more months on it. If you're going to SORN it & not move it for a while then put it on a battery conditioner (Ctek or similar) & pump the tyres up to say 45psi (dont go above max pressure marked on the tyre). It should fire up without any issues when the time comes & your tyres won't suffer any sidewall stresses once you drop the pressure back down to normal.

OK, good point about keeping the insurance running. It lives in a locked garage but no point taking risks...
MOT will run out next month ( though of course we get 6 months grace) and it's already hooked up to a Ctek. Didn't know about overinflating the tyres though - makes sense I guess.

I've SORN'd mine too. Any recommendations on turning over the engine every month to bring it up to temperature or is it best to leave it?

Leave it. You'll never warm it up properly & it'll cause more wear than just leaving it alone. I SORN mine each winter for 4 months without issue.

SORNed mine Z4MC last October. I ususally un SORN it April. Not much point this April cannot go anywhere. Keep insurannce then you can get to MOT station legal and the garage might burn down. With Insurance and MOT you can road tax. Start it up onece a month run to operating temp. Put it on jacks if possible so tyres don't get flat spotted.
