SORN rules

Am I reading the rules correctly ?

Am thinking of SORN'ing my zed - I know this is easy to do online - my question is do I have to keep it insured while it's Sorn'd . I intend to buy a bigger car for daily use - my wife doesn't want to get rid of our Fiesta as she doesn't like driving big cars - as I'm 6'7" I would like something bigger and more comfortable as a DD - as the zed is totally original and still under 30k miles I don't want to sell it so would virtually store it for a while. We also have the VW campervan so ideally would just transfer the insurance on the zed to the new car - would end up with 4 vehicles ( a bit daft when there's only 2 of us but we do have a drive big enough to take 3 vehicles with the zed in the garage.

Reading the DVLA rules it's a bit ambiguous about insurance.

Have you looked at a SORN policy - covers you for fire, theft etc, and a lot cheaper as you are not putting mileage on it?

You don't have to but what if its stolen

Good point but it would be difficult to nick as there will always be a car parked in front of the garage so impossible to get out - famous last words but we don't live in a high risk area - went to Spain once for a week and left the front door unlocked

I have 2 vehicles on SORN and as posted you don't need insurance, but if you do want to get it then the insurance has to be for 'laid-up' and the insurer advised it's on SORN

Surprisingly on my Jeeps it's more expensive than normal road cover as I assume insurers find it's all too easy for them to be stolen or a mysterious fire over time ...

Confession: a few years back in went to work and left the back door (which kind of acts as the front door for all of the folks in my street, bit strange) open. Not unlocked, properly open! Thought I'd been burgled when I go tback but, phew, no issues. Reckon it was a good night the night before...

Are you saying I have to advise my insurance company when I SORN my car. I can't see anywhere online that says I have to do this.

I certainly had to tell my insurer and they refused cover continuation advising they did not cover 'laid up' vehicles.
That was with a specialist 4x4 insurer. Obviously i cannot speak for any other companies.
I'd just call, check and have oeace of mind.

+1 for insurance, it's not just about it getting nicked, winter is upon us and there could be gales resulting in flying roof tiles, or severe hailstorms (there was a thread on here a few months back about golf-ball sized hail damaging cars).

Gd luck

i use a company called A plan for the westy, dont need to tell them its laid up either. its pretty much the same price to insure it fully comp on 1K miles as it is to get laid up insurance and as i tend to have it laid up for only 6 months i just pay up in full and then i can use it whenever i feel like (just have to sort tax) depending on the state of the ongoing upgrade/work
