SORN car parked in my tenants parking space?

The DVLA will provide registration details for instances such as this https://www.gov.uk/request-information-from-dvla

Or as the above comments, speak to your local council http://findlaw.co.uk/law/government/local_government/street_cleaning_litter_and_illegal_dumping/8926.html

I think reading between the lines you're trying to have your cake and eat it. On the one hand you want shot, but also want to take possession and make money (Actually I'd want the same :) )
Given the police nor council have any interest then your best bet is to knock a load of neighbours doors, let it be know it's on your land and will be scrapped unless the owner contacts you. Put a letter on the screen and see what happens. If nothing after 7 days then a quick bit of legal advice from CAB or a lawyer as to if you can take possession if abandoned and/or how you can legally get rid at no cost if it's dumped on your drive.

Whatever I bet it's a legal minefield if you just start breaking it or dragging it onto the road and somehow it will cost you dearly...

Agreed i wouldn't start removing anything from the car no matter where it stands , can't see anything wrong with a friend with a 4x4 "moving" the car 50 yards being a issue though :? done early morning/late night & left at the first safe opportunity on the queens highway

Another example of a cheeky get inconveniencing every one else, the owner probably knows its private land thus hard for a private land owner to do anything, without expense to himself. X2 for towing it onto the highway.

Removing something that doesn't belong to you from your own property & placing it elsewhere for the owner to collect  sounds like a perfectly ethical thing to do  the car owner may have even lost it & be thankful you did it

Funny one this.
Years ago my car had the window smashed in the middle of the night while parked on my driveway.
A neighbhour phoned the police, they came to my house and chapped the door. They didnt get an answer as it was the middle of the night and I didnt hear the door.
I did however get woken by the sound of a lowloader reversing onto my driveway to take my car away.
I legged it out of bed to find the police had instructed the towing company to remove my car as it could not be secured.
It was on my driveway!!
So, is there any way you can brick one of the windows then contact the police and tell them there is an unsecure car and maybe they will remove it if they cannot get in touch with the owner.
Doesnt get you a free engine though.

Amazed neither police or council care.

I'll come round at the weekend to collect 'my' car if that's ok - thanks for reminding me where I left it!!

Agree, an abandoned vehicle which is either insecure or better still has a broken windows should get a response by the Police and get some action. However a lot depends on the officer attending and how many jobs he is dealing with at the time. Also cutbacks have altered what the police will deal with and the response times

so if somebody just decides to park up on your land then neither the police or the council will help you  :headbang:

I could come round and park in front of your driveway. Providing your car isn't on it so therefore preventing you from using it the police/council are powerless to remove it providing the car is fully legal.

i don't have a drive way lol

Found this advice from DVLA on another site from 2007. May not be relevant now but my son followed this procedure to obtain a V5 for an abandoned car about the same time.

If you have taken all reasonable steps to trace the owner, you should contact the local police, if you have not already done so, to check they have no objection to your taking possession of the vehicle.

It is the Local Authorities that are empowered under the Refuse Disposal (Amenity) Act 1978 to deal with the disposal of an abandoned vehicle in this instance. I would advise you to contact them if you want to acquire it. If you then want to register yourself as the keeper you can apply for a registration document by using application form V62. Form V62 is available from the Post Office®, DVLA office, or our website. The completed form should be sent to

DVLA,
Swansea
SA99 1DD

A registration document will be sent to you in about 4 weeks of our receiving your application, but as you are not the registered keeper, special checks are made so it may take a little longer. I must point out that the registration document is not a document of legal title. It should not be regarded as proof of ownership. The register we maintain is only concerned with the person currently keeping and using the vehicle, nothing more. Therefore I must warn you that this e-mail does not constitute approval to your taking possession of this vehicle and if any subsequent claim is made the Department will not become involved in any dispute over ownership.
A leaflet V100 is available at your Post Office® which contains other information that may be of use to you.

What about this as an idea ! Leave a note on the windscreen explaining that leaving the car where it is on private land is ok but subject to a £25 per day parking charge if the fee is not paid in so many weeks you will take possession of the car to pay the parking fees ? These bastards that clamp your car get away with it ? It has to be worth a try ?

Clamping isn't allowed anymore and you would have to of had signs up saying about any charges. The above wouldn't stand in a court of law.

Don't worry gents, im absolutely not going to stick any bricks through windows or forcibly remove it without giving the current owner ample time to get it sorted. Most likely its just been parked up for winter given that its a vert and the current owner is trying their luck with a parking space that is not in use. I'm not in a hurry to acquire someones pride and joy, but if they don't play ball im sure that may change.

Edit : That said i very much would like to have my cake and eat it

Just my opinion ....... but taking possession is a no no ...... even if there were legal rights, do you seriously want a pissed of ex-owner standing on your doorstep, he knows where you live :)

And launching bricks through windows will not help either, that's criminal damage whichever way you look at it.

If you lived closer I would pop round with my jeep and tow it, as long as you do not leave it in a dangerous place there is no problem.
Just like the police do, and parking wardens, all you have to do is leave a note on the window stating that the vehicle will be towed if not removed. You can also add that from the date of the notice a charge of whatever per day will apply.

So you wouldn't advise i introduce some rats to the wiring loom then :P .

Quick update. Applied for the details of the owner so i could request the vehicle be moved via a V888 form from the DVLA. I completed the form in full only for it to be sent back 2 weeks later requesting photo's all all manor of other crap like proof I own the space etc. Ok i understand why you need it, but for fucks sake surely it would save time and money if they asked for it on the form.

The DVLA needs a big shake up. Its out dated and being left behind by the rest of the world!

Completley agree - you still have to pay for the majority of stuff by cheque ffs - just do it online!
