Sooty exhaust (nothing to do with Sweep)

You may know I've recently changed from 2 litre to 3 litre and I've been monitoring mpg with interest.
Having read some of the figures posted by Forumites I've been a little disappointed in my low mpg.
However - I need to clean my exhaust tips and can't help but notice how very sooty they are internally -
a sure sign to me that the engine is running too rich?

Anyone have any thoughts - it must be possible to 'tune' the injection of the motor? I come from a background of carburettors
so am a little uncertain - I'll take it to my friendly independent to see what he has to say or back to BMW (its an AUC)?

Not sure about the sooty exhausts, mine tend to be reasonably clean, mind you I am a bit OCD in the cleaning department with my pipes.

I drove down to Lincolnshire on Saturday morning on the A1 and averaged 36.8 MPG over the 240 miles, quite a few miles with cruise control set to 80MPH.

Drove back on Sunday evening and averaged 38.3 MPG over the 240 miles again with cruise set to 80MPH, however weather was bad with heavy rain from just south of Newcastle to Edinburgh and in parts I was down to between 50 and 60 MPH for long stretches so that would account for the higher MPG
 
My old tips were pretty black and needed a regular clean. New tips haven't had a proper clean yet, but are black inside.

My old 3.0i was economical if she was in 6th gear most of the time. Was only when hooning that it dropped below 30mpg.
 
It's reassuring to hear that you've had similar soot. . . I'll give them a clean and then monitor

And use 6th gear more.

My average over the past few months is 31.7 but gets about 38mpg on the motorway, which I'm think is amazingly impressive
 
The tips have sooted up quite quickly on mine too, I'd say normal having seen the thread a while back where there was a lot of discussion on ... Erm polishing tips ! Lol

As for mpg, overall average on the 3.0 for me tended to be 32 with a large array of driving. To reset for a careful m-way journey could see 36mpg commonly , running v power with regularly checked tyre pressures.

My 3- si does too many short runs so I add redex and I think it helps to keep innards clean and seems to help with exhaust tips but blackish is normal for mine .
Mpg again depends on run average 24 around town but 35 on a steady long run.
 
I like to try to keep my tips clean & use autosol on them every time I wash the car but they soon get sooty & out of all the BMW`s I have owned my 330i is the worst for it for some reason.
 
Grab yourself a dremmel with a polish head, thats how I clean mine with a bit of polish :thumbsup:

My average mpg is down into the low 20s most of the time. But mine is only driven at weekends and for fun. I have tried to get better figures but I can't help myself and tend to end up going for a hoon instead.

It's reassuring to hear that others face the sooty exhaust issue. . .

I've got a dremel so I'll give it a go - they are in a state and need some tlc - but steel wool? - I take it its a different grade to the stuff I've got?!

The video was a big help and encouragement - I'll have to watch some more instructional vids.

Sounds like we have a similar usage Machine Monkey and I'll just get on and enjoy the Zed!

Those sooty tips...

I have them as well, though put it down to the obligatory excessive use of the loud pedal. Use a good quality fuel & you should have no internal engine issues which is where you really have to worry - mine runs sweet, no emission lights, bad idling or hesitation on its italien tune up diet
 
Ps I should have admitted that having cleaned mine I ( anoraky) spray into them with aluminium halfords best and that looks good for ages . Also Serves as a way of monitoring how soon or other they darken .
 
Mine get sooty quite quickly too, almost as bad as my old Fabia vRS! Clean them each time I clean the car so they never get that bad. A bit of elbow grease:

I clean mine with every clean also, never get that bad. After a 100 mile run out though they'll have picked up a bit of soot by the end.
