Sony HD Camcorder

I will be going back to the US in september, so I was wondering what the best option was to buy a camcorder:

- At Heathrow at Dixons tax free

- In New York (any NTSC issues or are they always PAL / NTSC switcheable now)

- In JFK tax free

Thoughts?

eBay has most of the outlets listed. Get a model # and go surfing. You may find a better deal on-line.

Adorama
B&H
and plenty others.

HD is universal, no PAL/NTSC difference, since part of the difference between the old formats was their resolutions. By definition, HD has it's own resolutions, 720p, 1080p, 1080i.

I doubt Dixons at Heathrow will be any cheaper than you can get online. US will probably be best, I often order from Newegg when over there but I guess you'll be wanting to buy it in person and online ordering can be tricky without an american credit card.

But after overseas shipping and taxes it may not be such a sweet deal. Many of those eBay sellers have storefronts in Manhattan and will make deals.

Thanks for that info, was not aware of the HD standard with respect to PAL and NTSC, great info - thanks. I assume warranty is worldwide nowadays.

I suggested eBay for pricing purposes. It might have helped if I wrote that huh? Many of these stores are in Manhattan so easy to walk in an buy.

Looking at the Sony HDR-SR12 at the moment.

B&H are a really good bunch and the store is well worth a visit.... a lot of places in NYC give cashback offers but you need to be a US resident to claim it. B&H also offer international warranties too, although most manufacturers offer that now.

In my experience tax-free shops are generally more expensive anyway.
