Something I've learnt this week..

After pondring for months weather I should change my exhaust system, for a little more grunt, I finally decided to do it yesterday. Big mistake, bought an exhaust off this forum that didn't fit properly, looks terrible (hugely ill fitting) and upon further listening (after trying to convince myself on the journey home) doesn't actually sound that great.

Lesson to be learnt? Of course. Why did I think that any company can create a better system than BMW can in their billion dollar research facilities. If you're thinking of changing your system, don't do it, learn from my rather expensive mistake. The car sounds great as standard, and will be going back hopefully over the next couple days.

Guessing it's this one

Indeed it was that one.. Also need to get my hands on a new original system as the old one won't weld back together. This has really rinsed me for nothing.

Longlife were big in the days when everyone was into modding. Unfortunately they were typically big shouty things on Saxos, Escorts etc rather than a performance choice. They customise to what shape you want but really more show than go.

There are some decent exhausts available but it's not easy to avoid the boomy rubbish.

Feel for you on this one - replacement exhausts appear to be an expensive lottery as mostly you don't know what you are getting until it's on the car

Unless you buy a known repeatable product that someone else has on same model Z ........ Like RPI on an M

Thank you for your replies, appreciate it. Very irritated that I was sold something that doesn't fit an Si properly. Ended up costing me hundreds. Does anyone have an e86 standard exhaust? That ISNT chopped up?

Hi

Feel for you on this one .. god only knows all the expensive mistakes and wasted money on cars over the years .. but at least you know now and can rest once you get the stock exhaust on that you have the best option. Just like our 35is sports exhaust original from the factory they have the sound just right ..

I will keep a look out for you

yep .. just keep it original and well maintained, best way to keep the value

It's down to taste, but for starters I wouldn't buy a second hand system, I'd have one built specially for my car. I had a straight through on mine for a year and I loved it

Try Remus.

OEM systems must conform to many countries' noise standards. Aftermarket systems do not have the same restrictions. A quality exhaust system can improve the driving experience and be a worthwhile investment, but only if you go with a good system. Remus, Supersprint, Arqray, Eisenmann all make excellent products.

Do you have any photos of the "huge ill fitting" ? I saw the same post about the exhaust you bought on here.

I've been considering changing mine out, but you've got me paranoid now.

You obviously wanted a bit of an extra growl out of your car, but now you have one you want to change back.

Can I ask what exactly is the problem you have with the new noise? Does it sound like a boy racer?

Have you informed whoever you bought it off on here there was an issue and if you did what did they say?

I wouldn't be put off , done right a aftermarket exhaust can be a great enhancement to a performance car
If you had done some studying & asked the right questions in the right place then perhaps you would have realised £100 for a performance exhaust or backbox is not gonna end (or sound) well
I couldn't be happier with the guys at BCS who set about the task in a professional manner & produced what i consider a bespoke product at a retail price & the proof with exhausts is always going to be there for all to hear
Just a shame youve ruined your stock system

I know you e had a bad experience but you are comparing a universal off the shelf, used unit with oem.

Of course oem will sound better.

That being said oem has no noise. Its dulled down and pressing on makes sod all noise of any sort.

I had mine made by hayward and scott. They can create anything you want and will tell you when youre being stupid too.
