Someone has gone into the side of my car :(

I think common sense is needed rather than a blanket interpretation of the rules. In the event of vandal or 'hit and run' damage, you'd have to be an utter mug to inform your insurer if you plan to fix it out of your own pocket. Unless you're risk averse to the point of self-defeating paranoia.

It is madness indeed and I would not dream of reporting something that had no bearing on "risk" in my world. If I was to drive into my own garage door, you think I would report it as a loss?

I was highlighting the fact that legally you are supposed to, practical is of course a different matter ...

I did not want the wrong statement that the user above made to be interpreted as fact.

I had someone do something similar... Dent and scratch along the door, wheel and skirt.

Dealer quoted me £1500... Got it done in the end for £800 including upgrading to aero skirts!!

I sincerely hope you also told your insurer so they could dry hump you for the next 3 years? They'll find out, you know.

Fair enough. Your first post in this thread made it look like you were suggesting the OP should self incriminate though.

Thanks very much guys for the useful comments/debate.

To clarify: - Yes I have already discussed it with my insurer to see if they would entertain a claim depending on the cost, however no claim has been made yet. I wanted to understand the ramifications on things like no claims etc if I did, and which repair shops they would use.

Now, based on all of this, I won't be completing the claims process with my insurer, as it seems like a smart repairer could do a satisfactory job at a budget which I could pay out of pocket.

So...to go back to my original question... are there any recos for smart repairers in west London?

Unless I'm mistaken haven't you already shot yourself in the foot?
If you go the way you propose you won't lose your no claims (as there isn't one) but it will be logged that you have had an 'accident'. there is then nothing to stop them or any other insurer (as they will also know)
loading up the premium at renewal.
The questions always asked - 'have you any accidents in the last 3 years'

Hope I'm wrong and good luck with the repair - struggled to see the damage at first - that IS shiney :)

Yes, you have done the legally correct thing but your premium will go up now unfortunately.

Pvr is correct, so a strange decision to inform your insurer before finding out how much it would cost to fix privately. Good luck with getting it sorted though, the damage doesn't look too bad in the pics.

Thieving gits! If the damage (not caused by the owner) has been repaired at the expense of the owner, why the hell should they have the right to increase premiums? It's legalised robbery :headbang:

It was explained to me that statistically you are now more likely to have an accident :o
In my case many moons ago, someone nudged into the back of me in a slow moving traffic queue.
It always makes me wonder if there is any point in protecting my NCD
You don't lose NCD but the premium is increased anyway! (loaded was the term they used, before NCD applied)

I really wouldn't mess around with smart repairs, get it painted properly at a good body shop. Needs to be rubbed down and prepared properly in dust free environment (not on your drive), painted then oven baked dry. As others have said, I'd say thats £300 job.

I've always though protected NCD is a bit of a waste of money. It probably makes no difference to premium in the 5 years following a claim and after 5 years you won't need to declare but the difference in premium for someone with 5 years NCD and claim-free in the last 5 years versus, say, 9 years NCD and claim-free in the last 5 years is probably negligible and certainly less than 5 years worth of additional cost for "protecting".

Unless they throw it in for free, like Admiral did for me to sweeten the deal.

Chatting up the Scottish girl - got the premium for the 5 cars down to £1200 for the year :D
