Hey all! Wifey wants to trade our 03 Z4 for a 2013 or newer model. We are in the US, FYI.
So, I believe I read that BMW chose to continue with the N54 in the Z4 as recently as 2014- but I am not clear if that was all of the Z4's or just the is model?
Additionally- any perspective on if the IS model is worth the premium?
Thanks for any advice.
Hi 'Dwink'....honestly you Americans...
Just kidding mate. Yes the 35is is the N54. It's a bit hard to say if the IS is worth a premium as you don't say which other model you're looking at, but as an engine it's, Imo, superb. So much linear power from low revs, you wouldn't know it was forced induction as there is zero lag, torque is the same, huge pulling power again from 1500 revs, coupled with a 7 speed DCT which has super quick changes with full auto, or sequential stick shift or paddles, it's all you could want if you don't mind it not being a manual. Personally I don't think it needs anymore power but some disagree, it's bloody quick as it is. The exhaust sounds fantastic, it's 10db louder than a 35i and the theatrical pops, bangs and crackles on throttle lift and downshifts are addictive.
It's a great car, a little dead in steering feel and nowhere near as sharp as the Boxster, but unless you want a very focused sports car it's excellent. Just a shame they didn't offer it with a conventional manual, but as I said the DCT is a fantastic box.
Go and try one, you'll be godsmacked at the grunt it has. Best of luck and keep us posted on how you get on please.
