Some quick help on Z4 engines

Hey all! Wifey wants to trade our 03 Z4 for a 2013 or newer model. We are in the US, FYI.

So, I believe I read that BMW chose to continue with the N54 in the Z4 as recently as 2014- but I am not clear if that was all of the Z4's or just the is model?

Additionally- any perspective on if the IS model is worth the premium?

Thanks for any advice.

Hi 'Dwink'....honestly you Americans...

Just kidding mate. Yes the 35is is the N54. It's a bit hard to say if the IS is worth a premium as you don't say which other model you're looking at, but as an engine it's, Imo, superb. So much linear power from low revs, you wouldn't know it was forced induction as there is zero lag, torque is the same, huge pulling power again from 1500 revs, coupled with a 7 speed DCT which has super quick changes with full auto, or sequential stick shift or paddles, it's all you could want if you don't mind it not being a manual. Personally I don't think it needs anymore power but some disagree, it's bloody quick as it is. The exhaust sounds fantastic, it's 10db louder than a 35i and the theatrical pops, bangs and crackles on throttle lift and downshifts are addictive.

It's a great car, a little dead in steering feel and nowhere near as sharp as the Boxster, but unless you want a very focused sports car it's excellent. Just a shame they didn't offer it with a conventional manual, but as I said the DCT is a fantastic box.

Go and try one, you'll be godsmacked at the grunt it has. Best of luck and keep us posted on how you get on please.

Thanks!!

You must keep an eye on us Americans at all times.

BMW is confusing with this one, I think they are marketing the Z4 with 'twin power' still, but the photos show an N54...

It was late and I didn't give enough of an explanation- but the plan goes like this. Sell her current N55 335xi coupe (E92) and our 2003 Z4 2.5 (a nice car, although not quite enough grunt and terrible electric steering) and purchase either a 35i or a 35is. It sounds like the 35is is essentially the BMW performance option which I believe you can add to the 35i if desired. I do understand the exhaust on the 35is is also different.

It sounds like you can't go wrong with either. Last question, if anyone has perspective. We are looking 2012 and newer, and I know a mild refresh occurred in 14. Any significant updates by model year that are worthwhile?

Everything John says and also try the adaptive suspension out.
Two cars in one.
Would endorse the above and some. Once you have driven the 35is nothing else will do.
