Some questions.........

Morning all,

Looking at replacing my daily driver next year and an sdrive 23i is on the short list. A few questions for you.

1. Are there any known reliability issues? I have heard of cracked wheels, water in the tail lamps and head lamps. Anything else?
2. Do the engines use any oil?
3. I have heard of paint quality issues on some cars? This seems to affect all BMW’s and not just Z4’s
4. Will the car run on regular unleaded?
5. Does the engine rev smoothly to 7K? This will be a daily driver and whilst I won’t be chasing the redline at all times it’s nice to know that the ability is there. One of the attractions of a Z4 over an MX-5 is the 6 cylinder engine.
6. What are the service intervals and how much will these cost of average?
7. Is it possible to transfer BMW’s 5 year servicing package between owners?
8. What warranty options are available, how much do these cost and what is covered? I’ll probably go for an extended BMW warranty after the original 3 year manufacturer warranty has run out although I’ll be keeping an eye on costs. I do around 15K miles a year.

I’m probably slightly unusual in that I will be looking for a basic car with a 6 speed manual ‘box, without the M sport pack and with the 17” wheels (better ride quality). Options I see as desirable include the sports seats and the interior storage pack.

Any and all advice gratefully received!

All the best.

Hi Ecos7

1. Are there any known reliability issues? I have heard of cracked wheels, water in the tail lamps and head lamps. Anything else?
if you really want to be clued up then you need to spend some time searching on the forum really, but stay clear of the 296 wheels, water in lights is a warranty issue; also search for failed hard top and HPFP issues

2. Do the engines use any oil?
Very little if any so far and I am on 25K

3. I have heard of paint quality issues on some cars? This seems to affect all BMW’s and not just Z4’s
none on mine

4. Will the car run on regular unleaded?
yes, but if you want to get the best MPG then super unleaded is the only way really, costs less per mile then standard due to the extra miles you get out of it

5. Does the engine rev smoothly to 7K? This will be a daily driver and whilst I won’t be chasing the redline at all times it’s nice to know that the ability is there. One of the attractions of a Z4 over an MX-5 is the 6 cylinder engine.
Smooth it is, if you want the best of all options, I'd recommend DCT and the auto/ paddle option

6. What are the service intervals and how much will these cost of average?
Again search the forum, but average seems to be first service at approx 20K+

7. Is it possible to transfer BMW’s 5 year servicing package between owners?
you would have to ask the dealer, but I bought mine AUC with 9K miles and they offered the 5 year deal to me as part of the deal for cash

8. What warranty options are available, how much do these cost and what is covered? I’ll probably go for an extended BMW warranty after the original 3 year manufacturer warranty has run out although I’ll be keeping an eye on costs. I do around 15K miles a year.
you need to get this as part of the deal really, all part of the negotiation (are you buying new or 2nd hand?)

iwatchlive, he must be buying second hand as 23 is no longer available new.

just got my 10 plate and they did not offer the 5 yr wty. I understad that its post jan 11 for not a lot. They have a full service one as well which includeds breaks and disks, i spent 800 at the 3 yr mark for pads all round and front disks. i had serviced it twice in the 2 yrs popping 40K miles

You will be offered extended wty just before the 3 yrs is out, my last 2.5 si sport it was 39 per month including everything and breakdown with a 100 excess per claim. i paied per month and canceld in 2 months since i now have the 10 plate.

the first 2 had no paint issues in the 2 years i owned them the 3rd did 2 very small blisters but all sorted. the new shape would think its too soon

oil was a bit hit and miss with 2 l needed in the last one on top of the normal service interval.

the new one s going in next thursday for 2 front light misting and water in the rear light. very concerend with this. the others had issues with indicator lights and fog lights misting
