Hi everyone, I just got my car back from the paint shop. They painted the front bumper which previously poorly repaired by the last owner. Refurbed two wheels and painted the brake callipers. I told them to paint the grill surrounds at the bottom left and right of the bumper in sapphire black and they painted the matt silver bar in gloss grey (same colour as the brake callipers). I think it looks way better then stock and the bits of the bumper painted in sapphire black looks better then the dark greyish /black plastic, works well on black not sure how well it work on other colours.

Here are some pics of the front bumper:

Wow! Nicely done!

Tell us about the brake calipers - are they stock units cleaned and painted or aftermarket? (take a guess at what one of the jobs I have planned for the winter layover? )

Cheers!
Andy

Hi Andy, they are stock callipers for the 30i. The paint shop cleaned them up and sprayed them.

My 35i is space grey metallic and I've been debating with myself what to do with the calipers. I wasn't sure about getting different calipers or paintng them in one colour, that doesn't blend with the body colour, but the shock of candy apple red that you have had done is very subtle... the intensity of the debating just gone up a couple of notches. :?

Since mine are stock and not the greatest looking calipers I decided to keep it subtle but still wanted to inject some colour hence the colour scheme that you see but now looking at it the candy red does look really good and I am wondering if I should have painted the main calliper in red and the clip in grey  but then again the ones on the back and tiny so best to keep it subtle.

If I went for a big brake kit then I would probably have done the whole thing in Candy Red or something even more lurid like dark purple lime green or something LOL. The stock calipers on the 35i I think look way better then what I have and probably you would get away with doing the whole thing candy red. Depending on how subtle or lurid you want it most colours will go with grey. I showed the painter candy red colour on my phone and he painted the red that you see, later he told me he used Mazda Soul Red!

Retrofitted the wind deflector today and I must say it makes a big difference at motorway speeds. I have been searching for the two little deflectors that go in the roll hoops but a couple of breakers I have tried want silly money for them, I guess will have to bide my time and wait for some to come up at the right price.

I also removed the ashtray and replaced it with the storage box, looks better with the ashtray but it is way more practical without it. Kept the ashtray for future in case I feel the need to refit it!

Your car looks better than new. Also looks to be in very nice surroundings, you must get to drive it open a lot. I'll have to come up with a plan for my calipers now :?

Thanks Cees, hopefully the car will be better than new when I finish with it :) . I have still got many mods planned but they will have to wait time / finances permitting. I am in Southern Spain near Malaga, yes nice surrounding lots of sunny days. Saying that it's been too hot until now to have the top down during the day but the weather is beginning to cool down a bit now so it will be down most days until next July. Marina del Rey is pretty nice too :) I had a chance to visit there some years ago when my cousin lived there.

Looking really good, the brakes look very good. Have you considered window tint and maybe put a shine on those tyres?

Thanks YDB, yes I have thought about the window tints but here (Spain) you can't put anything on the front windows, only the two tiny backs windows and rear screen can be tinted so I think it would be a bit pointless. Also I am not too much into the murdered out / gangster all black look  I've already put some tyre shine on :) , I took the photos the day I picked it up from the paint shop so it needed a good clean, anyway it's booked to have a full detail next month.

This arrived today:

IMG_8351.jpeg

It's quite a neat little gadget, you can adjust it to show various parameters such as revs, oil temp, coolant temp, voltage, turbo boost (for turbo cars) etc. plus you can get performance, braking data and error codes. It is just 3" diagonal so sits neatly in the corner of the dash and plugs into the OBD port. I managed to hide the cable behind the dash and the A pillar and then just lifted the door seal and hid it behind and tucked it behind the kick panel. Only issue is I can't close the flap for the OBD port now, so I am going to have to think about what to do there.
