solved and updated: EML and engine lights on ... it was the starter

Being fairly new to Z4 ownership I'm not jumping to any conclusions but ..... this afternoon i was pulling out of the car park and hit a bit of a bump in the road. nothing unusual but the DSC and yellow handbrake lights came on at that.

a lot of threads talk about it being sensors but I'm wondering if it could be the handbrake for me... you see I've been planning to get a good look at the brakes this weekend as the handbrake has a bit of a habit of seeming to lose interest in being a brake every now and again ie sometimes ( including today) i can pull the handbrake quite freely from fully down up about 30 degrees before i even need to click the button. Sometimes it seems to work no problems and others ... well you get the picture.

any thoughts ?
 
Not the handbrake I am afraid as that would not trigger those lights. A sensor sounds much more like it.
 
under the hood i go then .... :( . oh well at least i had already planned on getting the tyres off this weekend to have a look at cleaning up the calipers
 
When you say it came on did it stay on?

If it just blinked then it's simply indicating that the traction & stability control systems kicked in momentarily.
 
Permanently on .. did 15 miles to work today with the light on. left it in the car park for 9 hours and now the lights have gone out ..

this thread should help. Would appear to be sensors for the brakes, which could in turn have an effect on the traction control perhaps.....

update - so this morning it took the car a few cranks to start ( vroom vrrom vroom Roar instead of Roar!, if you get my drift) pulled the car onto the drive to give it a clean and then went to start and move it ... nothing. the EML and engine lights have now come on.

beginning to think the battery might be low on juice as the car had sat on the previous owners drive for most of the last year. I disconnected the negative as a start to getting it on a trickle charger but the alarm started going off for about 20 seconds, then stopping for 20 seconds then off it goes again.

sounds a bit like a battery,

incidentally if the two yellow lights are on then it must turn something off as mine does it every so often. the last time on a roundabout at very low speed it totally caught me out and i almost ended up being arse about tit. completely my fault i was being lazy and just hoofing it whilst not paying attention.
 
Chuck a new battery in - once it's been fully discharged you'll never get the same out of it again, for £60 odd it could be an easy fix, sounds like it needs doing anyway.
 
new battery in and no joy ... think at this stage its the starter.

Monday night charged the battery

Tuesday night i gave that starter a knock and the car turned over. then it didnt ten minutes later

wednesday night it turned over, went for an hours drive and parked up. Thursday nothing. So a new battery just chucked in tonight and no change.

for clarity the original lights have gone away, now its EML and engine lights
