Solid mass flywheel

Afternoon all,
Is there anyone on here who could advise on SMF's

My clutch rattles it's t!ts off and ideally needs replacing, do you know if the following would fit? It's compatible with the E46 330i so I'm assuming something like.this would be.....ok????

Failing that if anyone knows of viable options it would be very much appreciated

TTV do clutch and flywheel kits

They do one for a standard clutch and another for motorsport clutches

Failing that they will make one for you.

Light weight flywheel for a S54 and a 6 speed gear box to take a standard clutch is £285 plus vat

No

But ring and ask For Ben he will advise as to the one that will price as an example

If he does not make one now he will make you one

He made a full race set up for a 3 series race car from a drawing with all the bits included for around £1500 plus vat

I'll give them a call, however in the meantime has anyone got any advice on an off the shelf kit?

Looks like it's got to be a 240mm with 22 splines?

Luk are recommended by most people for the friction plate cover and release bearing and are standard parts

Then add an after market single mass flywheel from TTV as he has made them work together or with his clutch

Other options as a mix and match of parts as some single mass flywheels are a different height/depth so when you get it back together the release bearing is in the wrong position so a lot of measuring to get it right

Be wary of resonance frequency issues of solid flywheels. Yes, you can fit them but then you can gain other issues. I have known engines to internally destroy themselves from removal of harmonic balancers and flywheels. Go fast for a while and then the bottom end fails. Cant explain the reasons but worth a read up before you commit. Personally, I would just get a new DMF and sleep at night knowing it will work for a while before the rattle returns. But at least the bottom end will be OK.
On the other hand, a mate fitted a solid flywheel to an old diesel slogger Peugeot PD for a friend and although never went above 3k revs never gave any issues and wasnt the reason for its final demise.

I had a diesel Alfa gt, heavily modified that had a conversion to solid mass, never had an issue with it. That said it never had issues with harmonics like the m54b30 (oil pump nut). That's certainly something to consider now it's mentioned.

The M52/54 work well with a lighter flywheel, had 9.5kg fly on mine for years. If you raise the rev limiter make sure you weld up that Oil pump nut or at least buy the upgraded unit, I know this from personal experience when it let go on the ring.

That one won't fit, that one is made for a 5 speed. The number of splines in the clutch plate is incorrect.

Valeo has a complete smf conversion kit for 6 speeds. But that's not with a lightweight flywheel

Spoke with TTV, £349.20 for a non lightened flywheel. Compatible with a standard clutch, so I'm guessing no springs to dampen any vibrations........

So for anyone interested in SMF conversions, I have ordered a kit from RTS. Cracking customer service. Kit comes with a sprung clutch so should be similar to an OEM feel. Hopefully won't be long till it's fitted :driving:

Indeed always get a sprung disc when converting to smf, unless maybe if you have a dedicated race car.

The complete valeo kit is little over £400 (flywheel, clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing) :

Couldn't agree more. TTV didn't offer the option of one in their kit unfortunately. The RTS one came in at £340 and they added a release bearing in for free, so that was a bonus.
