In the recent "Worst car ever owned thread" I quoted the 1 series we had as my most hated car. It was terrible mainly due to being a weedy petrol variant.
I don't really rate the BMW 4 pot diesels over the common rail VAG alternative. If you are buying a BMW diesel it has to be a 6 pot. 330d ed is the best buy and not much more to run than a 320d.

Well I guess it depends on what you came out of and what you expect/want from a car.
I went from a performance car to a 4 pot 3 series diesel. I kept telling myself that the fuel saving I was making was great but to be honest that was always wiped out by the expensive annual service and higher insurance on an annual basis anyway.
At a budget of 7-8k you'd be looking at prefacelift models so the older engine. I got an average of 45mpg out of mine on a daily commute of 30miles each way 50/50 motorway/town.
Each to his own and all that and plenty of people seem to rate them (mainly sales reps) but not what I wanted from a car. I used to look at it on my drive and wonder where my life had went wrong. It was soooooooo dull.

The costs weren't excessive but enough to wipe out any saving from lower fuel cost and VED on the diesels. I did lots and lots of maths and brim tests based on my average of 14k miles per year and you only need to get a petrol that can do 32mpg to break even at that mileage. As the mileage decreases a diesel makes even less economic sense.
The only service I had done on my e90 was £400. I only kept it a year and there were other bills but I'm not counting those as they were general wear and tear. The last service I had in my A3 TDi non Quattro was £500 but that was a cam belt/water pump service. The previous service was £270 which I thought was pretty good. All were done at the same independent German car specialist. I have all my cars serviced annually no matter what the computer tells me. Leaving oil in a car, especially one with a turbo for more than 12 months isn't something I would feel comfortable with.
I always end up sounding like the chairman of the anti diesel association in these threads but i don't mean to. I guess I just try to make the point that overall ownership cost may not be as economical as you think unless you are doing 20k miles per year.
