While not totally on topic. It is related.
Watched a show on skytv this week. Can we make a star on earth with prof. Brian Cox. One of his guests. Owns a wind energy company. This guy dealt with facts and not emotion. To paraphrase. He said to replace an energy usage of 5kwh per person with greenhouse gas friendly energy in 25 years. Would require the simultaneous building of 2 nuke power plants a week for the next 25 years. Install 250 sq meters of solar panels per second for the next 25 years. Fill 4 Olympic swimming pools per second for 25 years with bio engineered bacteria for bio fuel. And I believe cover 3-5% of the earths surface with 1-3 mega Watt wind turbines. All that would supply 5 kWh per person. Our current usage is I believe 11.5 kWh per person. Yikes! Those figures were pulled from my memory. And may be off a little. But it does show that stopping all drilling of oil or mining of coal is not the best solution. As it would be impossible to replace it with alternative sources.

It is a common misconception that PV only operates in direct sunshine and is therefore not suitable for use in temperate climates. This is not correct: photovoltaic cells make use of diffuse solar radiation as well as direct sunlight.
The light of the sun consists both of direct light and indirect or diffuse light (which is the light that has been scattered by dust and water particles in the atmosphere). Photovoltaic cells not only use the direct component of the light, but also produce electricity when the sky is overcast.

A bit like the Cycle To Work scheme where you get a bike VAT free. The bods at HMRC never liked that plan and after trying many ways to change the tax benefit they have finally won! As of January you now have to pay VAT as they have dreamt up a loophole! This also hits people already on the scheme because even if they only have a few months left on the scheme, the VAT for the remainder cost of the bike is to be added!! So what is the point of the scheme now apart from being able to have an interest free loan for 12 months! You still get the repayments from NET pay so you pay less tax and NI, but you can get better deals from the shops now the VAT is back on!

it sucks either way. In my case the bike shop gave me a discount on the bike - then took the VAT off and my bosses paid for it direct without involving any of the organised schemes. The loan has just finished
Do you really have any doubt that when the government sees the opportunity to lower the prices of solar energy payments they wil do so? They'll just point out technology is now cheaper and that people are unfairly making a profit on electricity, regardless of it is was a previous committment.
If governments can raise pension ages at a whim, I doubt they will bat an eyelid at a drop in solar energy payments when they feel ther political climate is ok to do it or publicity from the scheme is waning.
