Solar battery charger

As it says on the tin, looking for recommendations as no power in garage ,also is it wise not to use the ones that plug into the ciggy lighter

I use one on my E46 which has an ability to drain it's battery in two weeks. I use a ciggy lighter one, just unplug it before starting the engine.
Go for a larger, more powerful, more expensive one.

A friend of mine with a Audi TT (yes he likes hairdressing) uses a Solar Powered pack and says it works a treat.

Not sure how much he paid for it but can find out if you are interested.

Cheers Tomoz that would be good, you get wot you pay for seen some cheap ones but recommendations always welcome

His TT isn't white so maybe he is "less hair dressy" than most Z4 drives afterall!

I bought one from the AA Essentials range. Plugged into the OBD port. Don’t know if it works or not? Still in the testing phase and recently the battery died again, so seemly doesn’t. Possibly just the connection? Again still in the testing phase.

So I’ve got another one on order which charges through the ciggy port and is supposed to be a heavy duty one. So let’s see how this one fairs!

Interested if someone has one which defo works, robust, etc.

I believe that having a roadster is enough to qualify. The colour is irrelevant. :D

I believe simply owning a Zed is ample to qualify.

My TT Friend (yeh the one with the hair dryer - lol) said he purchased his from Maplins but it was similar to this:-

https://www.care4car.com/12-volt-electrical/ring-rsp150-and-rsp240-solar-power-trickle-battery-charger.html#.W9a8_ZP7SM8

He said it works a treat although he did rig it to the battery and doesn't use the Ciggy Socket.

Hope that helps

Tomo

I’ve got one of those from maplins, obviously not as good as a mains powered unit but I plug it into my 125cc Suzuki and it seems to keep that happy

Are there any issues with using the ciggy port?
For the past 15 years I have looked after a large car collection and I charge all the cars on a trickle charger using the lighter sockets.
The chargers only pump out up to 3a and never had a problem. I can't see a solar panel putting out more than that so should be ok.

Ok just looked at the solar panel battery chargers and they are pumping out about 0.2A. They will not blow the fuse for your lighter socket.

Okay fab thank you!

How many watts? The one linked is very similar to the AA one. Has a meager 2.4W would it be better to have 4W? 8W is deemed as boat territory so might be a bit much? Lol

An 8W solar charger is still only 0.7A. I think the limit will be how big your dash board is

Sounds like i have to have it on my dash which is no good as car is in a garage and I thought I could mount the solar panel outside on the garage door
