Software Updates

I have often read on other Z4 sites (and maybe here?) about 'software updates' being installed by the dealer. Anyone know what they are specifically? Is there anyway of finding out what updates are available? For example, I understand that some cars have a later version of software so the navscreen default position is down.

There are engine map updates, gearbox map updates, ICE updates etc.

Generally chargeable work unless fixing a fault.

I have Rev 759 in my ECU, needed Rev 760 for the Dinan remap, BMW just put out Rev 761 and the dealers equipment defaults to the latest rev so I had to update my software at my expense to be able to get the latest Dinan that talks to Rev 761,( available in California, not downloadable yet) remap. Confused ? yeah, so was I at first.

It cost me $135 for the software upgrade because I was not getting a part replaced that needed reprogramming, otherwise it would have been free.

I'm not sure if there is a separate program for each major computer or if it's just one big one.

My original question was more to do with software updates that fixed 'faults' such as the operation of the nav screen. In the way that microsoft issue updates for free to overcome bugs do BMW do the same, or they the only company ever to have bug free software? Is there a list that shows all of the latest software issues and the associated fixes?

No, maybe an internal BMW document. Or something leaked on Xoutpost.

If you go to dealer and say 'My Nav plays up and does X' and a fix is out to sort X, they will generally do it under warranty.

If you go in and say I want the latest updates for everything, they will generally charge you. You could try chatting with your friendly sales/service dept and seeing what they suggest.
