Software updates on second-user Z4 G29

We've just bought a Z4 G29 registered in July 2020 and are very pleased with it. We've obviously spent a bit of time sorting out the various settings to get the car how we like it. Yesterday there was a message on the MyBMW app on my phone that there was a software upgrade to Version 07/2021.85. I decided to leave it until today to install it. I went to do it today and it's nowhere to be found. I went through the menus in the car and found the Remote Software Upgrade setting and it says the current version is 03/2021.50. I left it searching for upgrades as long as I could but had to leave it.

Can someone explain please what is going on? 2021 seems a long time ago to be the latest upgrade! I've tried to find a list of upgrades since then but no luck. Any help gratefully received!

Good luck, I've been waiting for mine to update for nearly two years! (seems to be a common issue and not only with G29's). BMW aren't interested so don't waste your time talking to them (I spoke to them on numerous occasions with promises of solutions that were never delivered). If you've bought from a BMW dealership then I'd be asking then to do it, when I spoke to my dealership they wanted £80 per hour to investigate! The strange thing is the car seems to handle remote requests from BMW when the connected drive upgrades are due (maybe because there is money involved!) or updating the sat nav maps.
 
Mines also a 20 plate - purchased in Dec 24
An update was available almost immediately. it downloaded to my phone but wouldn't install, although I could 'see it' on the display
I read on here somewhere that there are multiple criteria's to be met before this happens (battery state, outside temp etc etc)

The car had to go back to the dealers a few days later so I mentioned it, (being Dec there was no chance of meeting the temp criteria ;)) they said no problem ' we can force the install'. which they did, no charge.

Thanks, both, for your responses. Interesting that you had very different experiences with your dealer! Things changed this afternoon when the 07/2021.85 upgrade popped up again. I did the download and when it had finished my phone told me to complete the upload in the car. Ever since then it just says this :( Was that you were seeing, obewan? If it's still saying that in the morning I'll contact the dealer.

Sorry, TBH I can't remember for certain - I thought it was saying 'installing' but never completing, but could be wrong
I wonder if you have a few software updates to catch up on?

Thread 'Remote Software Upgrade'

So my BMW Ap says “upload to BMW completed” for the latest software update 07/2021.85. However, no further instructions on my in car screen as yet. Can’t recall it taking this long last time it updated so not sure what’s going on? Cant find the new update in settings either. Anyone know what’s happening on what I can do?
Found a link to a discussion here - it initially states temp condition above 10C, but later is corrected to above -10c

I'm wondering that too - possibly 4 years' worth! If each one does this that'll be no joke :eek:
 
Needs the battery level to be high enough. A good 30 min drive should do it. (Assuming battery is still good)

Then when you switch off car and have handbrake on, it should allow you to do the software update.
 
Had similar experiences with my 2020 M40. First update after I bought the car went smoothly over the air after the download completed.
Second one, couple of weeks later, got stuck forever.

When I brought my car to my garage they forced all the pending updates.
They told me the updates got stuck because I had disabled the ASD in the software using the removal of FSC code option (because the other easy option did not work). After resetting the FSC code/ASD the updates worked as expected.
Apparently (I could not remember, thought I did those before the first update....must be my age) I did the software tweaking, using bimmercode in between the 2 software updates I received over the air.

They also told me over air updates tend to get stuck due to errors popping up in the registers of one or more control units, not necessarily noticeable by errors or messages in the iDrive. And once the system has unsuccessfully tried to install the downloaded update several times it just stops doing so. In that case only to be reset by the garage....

OP here and I'm still waiting to be "allowed" to update. Ori, we have taken it on several trips and the handbrake is on but still no joy unfortunately. Wolter, I haven't disabled anything (wouldn't know how to :)) so I really can't see what's wrong. It's been long enough now I think so I'll be going back to the dealer. I'm curious as to why the previous 2 owners didn't do any updates. Presumably they would have been notified?
 
Mines on a trickle charger so the battery should be ok, ive tried all the suggested settings and still nothing, updating apps / turning idrive off/on. I recently updated the maps and that took a while as I don't think it had ever been done, no communication problem there or as I said earlier when the contract for spotify etc. needed renewing . I'll be interested to see what the dealer says about your car.

Maybe the previous owners mucked around ..the ASD is a favourite one..
 
When dealers do software updates they do put a voltage booster on to makes sure it is full voltage and ensure the update will complete
 
Contacted the dealer yesterday and the Sales guy said he would ask the Service team and would ring me back. He did mutter about "paid upgrades" which I'm not happy about. Of course he hasn't so I'm ringing him tomorrow. I'm going to start a new post to see if anyone can let me know how many upgrades have been missed as I can't find a list anywhere.
