Software Update

Hi all

How does one update the software on a 2010 E89?

I’ve downloaded the file from BMW, but there is no software update option in iDrive -> Settings

The purpose of the update was to improve USB compatibility with lightning, since it doesn’t recognise it at the moment.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

If I remember correctly the USB has to be less then 32g and be FAT32 formatted, insert in the glovebox USB socket, turn on ignition and it should automatically install the update, have you checked your current version as it won’t do anything if the USB has the same version

It’s a 16GB drive formatted as FAT32

How do I check the current version?

What did you download?
AFAIK there is only a multimedia update available. That has nothing to do with the car's system (ecu's) software

The multimedia update reckoned it improves compatibility with iPhone 5 - my thinking is that it may allow me to plug in my XS, since currently I get "not supported" when plugging it into the USB port

It’s in the I drive menus, but from memory can’t remember where, just have a search through for something like system info

Can’t for the life of my find it - all the videos show it should be at the bottom of settings, but the option just isn’t there

The Bluetooth update is a .bin file and needs to be in the top directory of the usb stick..plugged into the ARMREST USB port

Interesting - that option simply isn't there. Door lock is the last option on the iDrive system on my Z4

I think some early E89s didn’t have the right revision of hardware/firmware to allow end user updates.. :tumbleweed:

Bummer, thought that may be the case. I'll take it to my local BMW garage once out of lockdown to see if they can do anything :-)
