Software update advised? /struts in pairs

Hi everyone,

Quick question for you. My 2012 35i Manual was in the dealer. They said I'm still running the original software in the vehicle and want to charge ~$200USD to upgrade it.

I was curious if anyone had an opinion on what has changed and if this is worth paying for. Thank you so much for the advice!

Edited: also, should the front struts always be replaced in pairs or not required on these cars? πŸ™‚. Sorry for the ignorant questions. Thank you!

Best regards,
Brian

There was quite a big ECU update in 2013 for the 35i and 35is. Not sure I'd pay $200 for that though. Maybe haggle a little to bring the price down.

I have seen it mentioned that the mileage on the car dictates if changing as a pair is necessary, which makes sense to a degree. I would say ask BMW for clarification but frankly in my opinion they know very little about their own cars...... Sure some 'genius' on here can give you a solid answer....

Thanks for the answers. I'm at 140k miles +/-.
At that mileage and on the assumption the struts are the originals, then I would definitely say change the pair.

At that mileage I would change the shocks and springs on all four corners (if originals), not just the fronts.

In regards to the software, at $200 don’t bother, your car has managed 140,000 miles without the update just fine...
