Soft top removal started (NOW FINISHED)

done it with my pump i replaced it then had a go at getting it going can wd 40 sprayed rust out .cleaned the rust off painted it i have now got a spare that work perfectly :thumbsup:

That is really good to hear :) I think I am def going to try to clean before i replace.

Did you also use a heat gun to dry the motor before installing? Also, I read about putting the motor in forward and reverse to let it run on a 12V source, where is this done on the motor to accomplish the two different movments? Thanks in advance... :)

Thanks everyone, yes pretty much, its a sealed motor so you had to work with what you can. By turning and beating the motor with a rubber mallet it loosens the major rust and you see flakes of it fall through the gaps in the side of the motor

The loctite super cleaner is a solvent based cleaner and removes any kind of dirt or grime you can think of.

It doesnt leave any residue and dries quickly which is why i used it. The heat gun i used was to help dry out any remaining rust.
Running the motor for a long period of time forwards and backwards helped to clean the brushes and commutator contacts.
The windings of the motor were all fine and the coating to stop them shorting out were still in great condition so these i knew were fine.

A quick spray of loctite to remove any residue from running the motor/cleaning the contacts followed by a quick retest and the unit was ready to be reassembled.

Well done on that job :thumbsup: just one thing..yes it is a sealed motor but there are ways, I opened mine, cleaned commutator, brushes everything and reassembled it and it works really well too. There is a way to close it up properly using the same method that the factory used.... metal peening. :)

No ! sorry , but there's not much to it ..just the metal bearing housing , then the brush block, a washer then the armature. Just like any standard motor. :)

Hi, no you don't have to, but it might be more convenient, there are 2 allen key bolts..remove them and the motor seperates from the hyd. pump.
 
HELP NEEDED. Followed ship killers instructions on removing soft top to get to replace the motor but new motor in and it keeps blowing the fuse. Have a feeling the electrics were not put back properly. Does anyone have insight or diagrams on the electrics for this?

And yes helpfully the instructions do say to take a pic and not rely on memory but what can I say it wasn't me, it was 2 guys with tools.

There are two identical plug/sockets behind the trim that can get mixed up, try swapping them over. I incorrectly connected mine and blew fuses,
That was by following Shipkillers "The connectors are keyed so they only fit with their proper mates. You can't screw this up when you reconnect...." info...,

Oh yes you can.
 
Erm yeah you defo cant screw that bit up........ well maybe you can.

Its great to see a true sports car enthusiast doing his own repairs , well done, myself this week replaced my complete suspension front and rear, very rewarding .
 
I just followed info given by the OP which was brilliant and now have a working motor again!!

I found the connectors to be keyed also so couldn't get mixed up if I tried! Maybe it changed in different cars? I relied on connector colour and the key pattern and it all went in!
