Apparently genuine soft top rear window for sale...

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-BMW-Z4-E85-HARDTOP-REAR-WINDOW-GENUINE-BMW-PARTS-54217076392-/200900771266?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Car+Make%3ABMW%7CModel%3AZ4&hash=item2ec69e7dc2

I thought I'd previously read somewhere that it was not possible to replace the window thus meaning a broken window meant a new hood complete? Why would BMW sell them if they can't be fitted?

I read somewhere of a hood replacement company in the UK that had the rights to use BMWs patented fixing method of rear windows. Whether they could replace a broken one, I don't know.

that would be really good as my heated screen is goosed. not even a single line works. :( so a new one fitted would be an attractive option

I have no doubt a hardtop screen can be fitted.

Off topic slightly..
Are you sure the rear screen has all elements out? I'd be looking at the connections in the pillars where the hardtop locates, as that's where power is picked up. Check voltage there and that both sides are connected. If that's OK does the softtop heater work? If so then off with the inner liner to check wires or pick them up at the rear screen

I managed to smash my hardtop window a couple of years ago

I got BMW to replace it, if memory serves right it cost me around £300, labour and parts

yeah nothing what so ever, tbh ive not done more than check the fuse as the only time i remember is when i need to use it :D or its raining outside.

didnt even know there was a heater in the soft top... is this turned on/off with the rear screen i guess the top would be warm to the touch if is is there.

where is best for a diagram of this lot? realoem?

I think we're talking at cross purposes. This eBay add and my comments relate to hardtops and their element.

Soft top has a rear screen heater, but wired differently.

You need the TIS & WDS to find the wiring diagram and cable routes

Correct. This happened to me. The rear soft top screen can not be replaced. Full new hood = expensive.

I think direct line are one of the few insurers who will do the full hood replacement if it goes. Everyone else says go away.

Surely if its insured they have to pay up ? :?

Apologies I'm obviously getting to that age when I can't tell the difference between hard and soft.

yeah its just me being a dimwit today too. :D still i have noting whatsowever working on my soft top rear screen heater.

im pretty sure if the hood was damaged etc in acident you would be covered but im not sure if the screen was broken it would be. i know with admiral the glass is covered by national and they said they dont touch soft top hoods you would have to go back to bmw.

Sorry, i was referring to the windscreen cover part of your insurance. Ie if you break the glass most will not replace as the hood has to be done too.

You might be able to do a full claim but then you have to consider the effect on NCB.

Take a look at your policy docs.
