Soft top question

Don't see any Z4 roadsters around me so decided to ask you:
When your top is down, is it locked in securely, or you can lift it up by hand? I noticed it flaps up and down a bit from the wind at hihgway speeds, and wondered if it should be like that or not....?
 
I have a 3.0si roadster and when the tops down it all locks into place and never moves. I believe that the hooks that lock the top to the windscreen header rail lock into the rear bulkhead and stop it all moving.
 
thanks, that's what I thought...

after the top folds i see the hooks move/close in, but there seems to be nothing for them to hook on....
 
The soft top should connect with a central latch but this was the subject of a BMW technical service bulletin where in many instances the latch did not connect properly and a minor modification was made. The latch has since been removed as not necessary. A quick search will reveal several threads on the subject.
 
I think it depends on the age of your car, mine is post facelift 07, and I believe the down latch was deleted on this model.

When the top is down I can lift it by hand, the BMW mechanic told me this is normal.

seems logical.. mine is a sept 06 Z4M
 
Shouldn't move up or down though. Is it folding the fablic correctly and thus seating fully down?

I deleted the catch on my pre facelift as they just rattle and frankly did nothing
 
I have an 06 z4si and it latches down. Go read your manual and there are alot of things to do to manually operate it. you have to go in the trunk and pull some things and then the giant latch button right above the center console button is right there. If you push that it unlatches the roof.. maybe it is stuck.
