Soft top protection

Hi all
I'm going to clean and protect the soft top first time for me going to use ragtop cleaner but unsure what protection to use. Would like to know whats the favourite on here from the people who know and more so does it need protection.

I have used the Autoglym kit before to good effect.
A lot of people will point out that the soft top is designed to let the water through the top layer, with an impermeable layer underneath, and that therefore you don't need a protective layer on it.
I would agree with the principle, but personally cannot see that adding extra protection can hurt.
After all, the paint on your car is perfectly adequate to keep the metal from rusting, but we all still lather on layers of polish etc as well.
I found there is plenty in the Autoglym kit to do the full roof twice, so it should last you a couple of years.

I've used Autoglym before (though not on the zed) and it worked fine. But if you have green algae gunk to clean off, I'd use a nice strong solution of Milton baby bottle sterilizer, and a softish brush first. That will kill it off nicely before you proof the roof.

Used Milton on my hood, just make a strong mix in some hot water say 3 or 4 capfuls should be strong enough to treat any green growth/staining. Use a nylon nail brush to agitate it into the grains of the roof material following the grain. Rinse with clean water and allow to dry. I use Fabsil tent waterproofer and use a paint brush to apply it to the hood. You need to mask the windscreen and side glass to prevent overspill. Pays to lay something over the bonnet as well as the boot to avoid splashes landing on the paintwork. Some have used Fabsil Gold which by all accounts is better than the standard Fabsil, I will try that next time. Once dry you will notice water then beads on the material. Both my Z3 and Z4 have the Fabsil treatment.

+1 on the fabsil

I know its hard in this weather - unless you have it garaged (but then you would have much green algae) but you get better results if you can clean the hood dry with a stiff nylon bristled brush and a vacuum cleaner (will get your neighbours talking for weeks - although the guy next to me has come to expect it ) then use the Milton and water; then wash again with hot soapy water.
