Soft-top operating up to 30 km/h

I can't find any info about how to change the maximum speed when operating the electro-hydraulic soft-top of a Z4. I think it's set to 5 km/h as standard. Does anyone know if a modification is possible up to for example 30 km/h?

Thanks
Martin

Welcome to the forum, Martin.

I don't think it's a smart thing to do, no matter what speed you're driving at. What if the driver behind you is too busy staring at the top going up or down and then there's a sudden stop?

1. Wait for a stop light; or
2. Pull over somewhere and raise/lower the top :|

There is absolutely no reason on god's overheating earth that should compel you to do something like that.

Be safe.

From what I understand, on a unmodified Z4, you cannot change this.

You can, buy a add on, aftermarket module to allow this...

maranander, welcome to the forum...
To the best of my knowledge you can't start the process of putting the top down or up while the car is moving even very slow. Once the top is in the process of opening or closing you can begin to move but like BlueMoon, mentioned there are safety concerns. I have opened and closed many times at a stop light and it only take about 10 seconds for that process to take place.

When I picked up mine yesterday, I was told I had to have my foot on the brake to raise or lower the top.

Do you frequently drive without stopping even once for 10 seconds? You must have absolutely no traffic where you live!

I can see merit in the ability to raise or lower say crawling in a line of traffic, but frankly I could wait untilk my next 10 second dead stop.

Interestingly I scan read something the other day and I'm sure it said the new 1 series can be raised or lowered at up to 30mph and the tester had checked it out.

There have been times that I got caught out in the rain though. Completely stopping would be a bit inconvenient as you would hold up the traffic (assuming there are no pull in places).

CJ10 - yes, you are right. Also note that the Porkers can do that standard as well. On the Z, the roof does not go that high that it would catch any significant wind at low speeds though.

Yea, saw MotorWeek test driving the 1 series, they had a clip of the soft top operating while the vehicle is in motion driving down the road.

Thanks for your comments. I don't want Porsche-owners to be the only ones beeing able to operate the soft-top when driving. Actually we have very little traffic where I live. Four cars in a queue we call a traffic jam and you can read about in the news paper next day . I found a very interesting product at Car-Solution in Germany:

I will for sure buy one and try it.

Very noisy, very bumpy, very tight, but an absolutely fantastic car, BMW Z4 3,0si roadster M-equipped!

LOL... +1 - I got soaked last summer in an instant cloud burst.
Nowhere to pull off & a guy right on my tail.

I pulled off within 500', but I was more than a little damp at that point

I modified my old Honda s2000 to be able to raise/lower the top when moving. You still had to engage the e-brake "1-click" to fool the car that the car was stopped even though 1-click on the ebrake didn't engage the brake at all.

This was VERY useful as I frequently found myself driving top down and halfway home there'd be a downpour and I'd want to put the top up briefly without pulling over. I successfully raised/lowered the top going up to about 20 mph without any damage. I wish there was an option like this on the Z4.

Here's how it was done on the s2000...pretty easy....snip one wire.

I have ordered a module from Germany taking care of it. I will let you know when I have tried it.

Assembled it a few days ago and it works just perfect. It took me two hours and the instruction is quite good.

IIRC the S2k is not a fully auto roof though, is it? Don't you have to lean over and clip the roof in?

So what speed does this unit allow the roof to operate at?
Up to 30 would be useful. same as the Porsche units. Might even be the same aftermarket module the Boxster owners buy?
