Maybe it's to stop finger trapping.

How else would anyone get their fingers in there?
But seriously, could be the case, but there's many other places in that mechanism to lose a finger, why protect that particular one?

I think Stu86 may be right, it could be a folding issue. Mine doesn't latch if the folding is not right the bulletin pic is not good. Below are pics of mine right and wrong.

If it's folded correctly the roof goes all the way down and latches properly.

how do you make it fold right?

also i don't see much difference between the first and second pic. just that 1 bit of fabric is taught in the second and loose in the first. how would you fix that?

I think BMW say to put the hood down folded correctly and leave it down for a day or overnight if garaged. It should then 'learn' to fold correctly.

You see in bladeowners picture there a wear mark on the edge of the fabric hood. The trim edge. Pull that but out when folding exactly where the wear mark is with your finger.
