Soft luggage optimum size

Does any one use soft luggage / holdalls ?
I have a had a good search and can find lots of threads about the Koffer fitted luggage but i don't want cases.

So has anyone determined the optimum sized holdalls to make best use of the space and still be able to lower the roof ?
I've measured the boot space and reckon two holdalls 27" x 14" should fit, but would be very interested to hear from any one who uses holdalls / kit bags

We have enjoyed our Z and use it mostly for long and short trips in the USA. If we are getting there by mostly interstate highways, we don't worry about lowering the top. We then fill all the nooks and crannies along the sides of the trunk(boot). Then upon arrival at, eg. a mountain resort we unload and the top can go down. If we are going to travel off the interstates, we pack more carefully and the top can go down. The two pieces you mention should fit nicely. We use one like you mention plus a smaller one (mine). This leaves space just behind the bulkhead for smaller things like cameras and this area is accessible through the pass-through. We also find that we can put larger items like windbreakers over the top of the luggage but under the shelf, so they are accessible as needed.
The pieces we use are the wheeled type with long retractable handles. These are fabric construction for light weight but are not really soft. Sometime we add a Gym Bag and we scatter foot-ware around wherever. There is plenty of room for everything we need. Our trips are usually for a week or two.
I envy your proximity to the alpine roads and autobahns.

The advantage of soft holdalls is you can 'cram' them in.
I get loads in by simply stuffing the centre area to the brim, pulling the lid over and snapping it down.
Dont spend a fortune just go to sports direct and pick up 3 or 4 holdalls that fit lengthwise inside the space and get stuffing....

The disadvantages are that they don't have wheels and that pulling the lid over and snapping it down can snap its plastic hinge brackets.

Just sayin'.

Antler do a few different options. I found a shop on a local business park and took the Zed to the rear door of the shop, popped open the boot and the staff were more than happy for me to play around until I found two that fit.

An excellent idea. Wish I'd done that.

Mind you, the German (Chinese) 'Koffer24' stuff ain't bad and has taken SWMBO & me away for a week with no bother.

I looked at the soft bag option once or twice but soon went into the Roadster Bag option.
I tried the soft bag system in the E85 but that system only worked for a weekend break - longer breaks we looked like hill billies! As soon as I bought the first E89 I bought the Roadster Bags and wouldn’t be without them now!

:) So far, I ain't broke any, but, because they're out of production, I'll admit that I'm frightened of doing it.

Thanks for the replies guy's.
I think two 65 litre holdalls will be just fine, we used to do our 15 day euro trips on a motorcycle so only had 40 litres each, but that was limited to 10 kilo including the weight of the pannier.
The S2000 boot was a very different shape but probably holds a similar amount to the E89.

The Koffer 24 stuff looks ok but its expensive in comparison and wastes weight and space with the wheels and handle system which I really don't need, I never have and never will wheel a suitcase along :D

These look tempting though

but again overpriced when you have to pay import taxes and delivery

"I never have and never will wheel a suitcase along" Why not? (Just curious.)

The roadtripluggage looks good, but, as you say, will be expensive. That said, from the (one) customer review, you get free mould.

I wont answer that on the grounds that I may offend someone :D

Seriously though I just feel happier carrying cases, I'm a big strong bloke and just prefer to carry them, I find it quicker and easier
maybe one day if i get too old and unable to carry them i'll change my mind, but then I'm unlikely to be going on holiday.

You’ll still be going on holiday !

I’m 70, got wobbly legs, had some heart work but I’m not in a box yet - far from it I hope but definitely not a strong bloke anymore, so I need cases with wheels to compensate.

Ps - not offended :D

Good for you mate I'm glad you're still enjoying yourself and have a nice car to enjoy, I really like your signature
Like I said I reserve the right to change my mind and switch to cases with wheels, when needed but for now I'll carry them.

The missus and I are not keen on flying so we go by car or motorcycle, so as long as I can still drive well, and get the cases from the car to the hotel then yes I'll still be going on holiday :D
I think the Euro trips by motorcycle are coming to an end but we will still do long weekends and UK trips on the bike.

going to Austria and Hungary in July so will need to sort some holdalls for then :D

Got to say tho that carrying or not, the Roadster Bags are good kit and make packing up a doddle - they can’t be overfilled so the boot contents over cover always closes!
They are expensive but they always sell - they don’t hang around on the for sale list for long and they command good money - so you won’t take a big hit.

I have muscles to carry mine, and the hinges are fine so long as you don't go daft..

Well said Gaffa, if you go soft and let your body get old it will, and very quickly. Carrying a case, walking up escalators etc, all free workouts and good for us.

I measured the boot space, and found luggage that fitted perfectly:
