Sods law

So earlier this month I was thinking I really must get the water pump changed - 88k miles - just a matter of time I thought - best to get in there first I thought.

So I ordered a new pump and planned to get it changed over before winter sets in . No particular hurry I thought as the current one wasn’t showing signs of failure etc etc.

So feeling quite smug that I was pre-empting a possible problem I thought I would take the Mrs in the zed this weekend to go and see some friends in Thame.

You guessed it on the way home this afternoon the water pump failed! One minute absolutely fine - next minute red light and a beep followed by lots of swearing and a coast into the next lay-by. Currently waiting for the second tow truck of the evening - the missus has taken the onward taxi transfer option (she has been fairly understanding - so far)

Sods law? or are Zeds psychic?

To be fair if you got to 88K miles I think you did well!

My 1st Coupe needed one at 60K and almost 10 years to the day.

The whole problem is they don't show any warning signs, they just stop. At least with mechanical ones they'd tend to weep or squeal so you know they're on their way out.

Now I'm really worried - my E86 is on 87,700 miles!

I just hope it's had one before because I don't need another bill like that - I needed a new one on my E91 325i (06 plate, so also an N52 engine) a few weeks ago. :headbang: Mind you that was at 135K miles, so my Indy reckons ithad probably had one before.

BTW I had to say an E86 in Montego Blue with Pearl Grey is an excellent choice!

I hope you get it sorted as painlessly as possible.

Maybe Sod's Law. I drove around for almost a year with the new pump in the boot before finally fitting it and got away with it.

At least you got a good picture for next month's photo competition !

What is this about the cost of waterpumps. My car is approaching 60k so put my reg into ECP and price wise they come up in the £40 - £50 price range. Is it the fitting which is a problem.

The facelift zeds no longer use a mechanical water pump, they have an electronic version which runs independently of engine speed

Paid £500 for a recon water pump fitted 2 years ago, cheapest I could find anywhere

Hi, they’re just over £200 on line (pierburg oem) and pretty easy to fit

Can this be taken to mean that facelift ones don't suffer like ore facelift ones do? 06 on?

Think they can both suffer, it’s just the facelift ones are a lot more expensive and fail without any warning.

Thermostats are also part electric with a wax element, so more expensive also.

Like I said earlier, the problem with the electric ones on the facelifts is that you get no warning signs that they are dying - they just die! :(

ECP are currently quoting over £500 for a Pierburg (OEM) pump, but Car Parts 4 Less are £355:- https://www.carparts4less.co.uk/water-pump-gasket

My Indy fitted a BMW supplied thermostat to my E86 3 years ago and it cost £100 with the VAT!

If there is a silver lining at least the OP will know it should be OK for another 60+K miles!
