So who has been driving in the snow ?????

Me plus neighbours spent a solid 6 hours digging out our road out to the main road. Thankfully the main road is a bus route and hence gets cleared fairly quickly. Which means I should be able to get the Z4 out for a play if it takes my fancy :)

Woke to about 5 to 6" of snow this morning, have to say that I had no problems, once I had cleared the snow off the car! I just took it easy, traction control light did not come on once as I made it out of my quiet cul-de-sac and onto the main road that was still covered in snow and slush, kept it to 25 mph or so.

I made it to work today and left early to be on the safe side, I have not had any problem driving the Z4 on the snow. It handles better than i thought it would, i'd love a set of winter tyres but dont have the cash at the moment.

On a slight off topic yesterday i bought 32" Sony tv for the inlaws forgetting i had my car with me and not the wifes, can you believe it actually fitted in the boot. :D What a good car the Z4 is  .

Great aren't they?

I've decided that I've taken mine to the acceptable limits now, I've taken it through lots of stuff so deep that the car is beaching on the slush and snow, it's certainly made some interesting noises, the front bumper is acting like a mini snow plough! Fortunately it gets resprayed in the spring anyway so not much of an issue! :D

I thought it was a smart move getting a rental whilst there's snow about, looked out the window this morning and now there's 2 white humps in the driveway :D and one of them is being paid for by the day .......

Its official today ..... the zed has gone ....... went outside this morning and now the white bump in the snow is now flat on top. Somewhere under there is my prized Zed :D
started this week by saying how much fun I was having driving it in the snow, now I cant even find it ........ :D :D :D

Left the office last night under 3 inches of snow. The B-road outside the office was not gritted and was a sheet of ice under the snow. (Thanks Surrey council!!) So as long as I was gentle, very gentle on power, brakes and steering I got home eventually. Between the office and the A3 junction took over an hour for a mile and a half of stop start. Out-RAGE-ous! On the inclines, I'd hold back and let the guy infront get ahead so I could maintain my momentum. Moving off on an incline, was a challenge. But made it, despite seeing other front wheel drive cars abandoned. Also a very determined young lady in a Z3 made steady progress ahead of me. She was probably in fear of me leaping to her assistance!

So today, I've been working from home, having been snowed out. The boss called this morning to say, don't risk it, access to the office is dangerous. No snow where I am, in Maidenhead. Took some pics of the car under snow.

::EDIT::
Here's the pics of the snow fall as I got in the car to leave work. While there was 3 inches on the ground, less on the car about an inch.

Was told by our "car park pusher and digger squad" today that I wasn't going to get out of the car park in a hurry, they were getting their snow shovels ready to help but I told them not to bother.

Not only did I get the car out of the bay unaided through a wall of snow quite a bit deeper than the ground clearance but I also drove off on the ice sheet and left the car park without so much as a shove. I shouted something at them as I drove out about the 7 P's.

The X5 did very well today in the very deep snow on the winter tyres. Guess that is cheating though ... :D

z4's should come with an old 4x4 for winter

you mean by the push of a button the Z lifts 6 inches straight up? :) :o :) it would look funny I think :)

Ha ha.
So far the snow seems to have landed around my home and also my current Mon-Fri route so have kinda missed out on the fun :). We have some snow outside right now that I think started to settle an hour or so ago and would love to experiment. In fact after reading your post I thought I'd go out for a drive then realised however that I've had a few glasses of wine :headbang: .
So far only managed to test the winter tyres in my clients car park but it was full hence the experiment was brief. Traction still broke easily under acceleration but I'm hopeful with careful throttle control the tyres will work just fine on a few inches of snow.

Had some snow a few days back at home but as I'm not much of a morning person the roads were well driven by the time I drove so were clear :(

My Yokos were fitted tonight. W.Drive 225.45.18

Maybe it was the placebo effect but even on the mile back from the garage I'm sure it felt very different. Real test will be tomorrow morning, after spending the last two days wheel spinning out of my road.

Hark - You may find it takes up to 500 miles to scrub them off, they tend to be quite slippery when new!

Darren - I'm pleased I'm not the only one that thinks traction can still be easily broken, all those people that say they can emergency stop without even triggering ABS in snow are talking rubbish unless they're doing less than 10mph. It's still easily possible to trigger ABS and to break the traction, the difference is that you can regain control a lot more easily than without them!

I made it about 3 miles this morning before chickening out and coming home

If there were no other cars on the road I would have carried on, but the fecking idiots tailgating, stopping an inch from my bumper and generally being impatient bastards were frightening me.
Besides, even with the tiny bit of snow yesterday only 8/16 patients showed up, would be even more pointless today

I love Jeremy Kyle!

With snow tyres that is not really the case. The newer the better as the soft "scoops" work the best when brand new. The more they wear, the worse the grip in the winter tyre.

Trust me mate, the first 100 - 200 miles they're as slippery as a well oiled slippery thing.

It's the release agent from the factory and it takes a while to scrub it off, hence they are actually worse for the first couple of hundred miles, many people quote up to 500 miles before they perform well.

Their performance does however tail off once they get down to 4mm or so as you say due to their inability to dig through the snow.
