So the roof motor final went!

:headbang: just 4 weeks before our 3000 mile Europe trip it finally gave up. I can hear the motor run but there is no lifting action. it does seem more of a hydraulic pressure problem but no doubt its all connected and will require a roof removal. Oh well, lookalike its a manual roof trip for us as we don't want to spend £500/£600 on fixing it before the trip.

Mine went on Friday night, no warning. Took the roof off and the motor was flooded ! Soaked it in WD40 dried it in the sun along with the foam and put it all back together. Apart from a few broken clips no cost, but what a job to do on your own.
Took me about 6 hours to get it all out and about 5 hours to clean everything and reassemble. Spent a lot of time removing the interior trim, roll bar plastic etc. The clips and 7 bolts holding the "hoop" were a challenge both to remove and refit. Few aches and pains, getting in and out of the boot is a challenge for someone my size and age !
Great satisfaction getting it to work again and saving a fortune, our dealer charges close to £100/hour so I'm sure I've saved over £1,000.
Really hope I don't have to do it again though.

Someone give kat the link to the guy that's fixing roofs at realistic prices quick! I think I'd go manual if my holiday was just around the corner! Hope you have a great time and get the Zed sorted eventually.

Mine also went on a recent euro roadtrip in 39c heat. I pulled the red hydraulic lever and reseated 24 hours later. The roof / motor then worked. All I could put it down to was the heat and expansion of the hydraulic fluid
 
Why spoil your holiday going with a duff roof motor as you are going to have it fixed when you get back.
When my roof motor packed up the other week their was a lot of resistance putting the roof up,not something I would recommend doing as I am sure you could twist the frame.
 
Putting the roof up/down manually is a pest. It's pretty heavy but with 2 manageable. On your own you do twist it alot. I know cos mines screwed too at the mo. any hoo if you do go manual I would strongly recommend getting a cheapo battery screw driver as the biggest pest is winding the locking motor all the time. A cheapo battery thing will be a great help

+1, I see you are in Chichester, there's a ex-BMW guy in Camberley (not a million miles from you) that changes the motor & loom for around £450, if interested I'll dig out the topic.

Thanks Tony that would help. moneys tight with saving for the holiday. We will just get it done when we get back as its not too much effort to raise it with both of us. I am going to try and reconnect the hydraulics to see if it works again though.
 
So I reconnected the hydraulics cable in the boot and the roof is now working again!

yep, I've mentioned this as a fix on a number threads including this one...
 
The roof motor has now died again! can anyone tell me the number of the roof guy who does it for £450-500? I only have two weeks before a 2500 European road trip and i need a fix. any help would be appreciated. :)

Feel for you guys! Typical that it's gone now just before your holidays.

The guy in camberley had very good feedback and for the price, you can't knock it.

I wait for the day mine finally goes pop, I know it's sitting in water already and need to do the drains.

So, I have just had the motor replaced by Walkers Autotec in billingshurst, great job done in 5 hours and at a cost of £650. Holiday starts on Monday with a blast down to Stuttgart and I am going with a working hood. thank god. :D

depending on where you live there's a few that do this, they don't charge £500 either! We have Bowser in the south & cherrym's mechanic Dave up in Durham :thumbsup:
