So one week on... does the fear go away?

So I've had my z4 coupe just over a week.

I'm loving every second of it, I can still quite happilly just stare at it out the window without getting bored. It's a great looking car and it's great to drive.

Thing is I can't fault it except for one thing... when I was looking to buy a z4 like most people my concerns were running costs, mpg, depreciation - all the usual stuff but it seems the only issue is that I seem to be slightly paranoid about my car being safe

I live in a nice area so I'm fairly happy about it at home. Problem is for me this is my every day car, so every day it's parked at work and I'm dreading the fact that sooner or later I'm going be heading to supermarket car parks etc in it!

I went to play tennis today and seemed to spend more time checking it was alright out the corner of my eye (fear of a stray ball hitting it) than watching the ball! - Still won mind you 8)

So is this just me? is it just new car syndrome that'll go away?- Don't get me wrong I'm not losing sleep over the thought of it being vandalised or anthing and of course I'll be parking it far away from any other cars in the supermarket car parks etc - but I'm starting to think I'd be more relaxed if I bought a second cheap car to avoid having to expose the z to these risky places!

Three or four times in my Focus (previous car) I had people bash doors into me whilst I was sat in the car in a car park. That really annoyed me and I had to restrain myself from beating them unconcious... I dread to think what I'd do if someone hit this one lol :D :?

I still have the fear. I got a runaround to soothe the anxiety on supermarket runs etc...

Now there's a thought...! My nearest one is about twenty miles away. I could go just after sunrise and get some hooning in too

This is why I run a junker as a daily driver and keep my good car as my Sunday best. I used to just run 1 nice car but would get too upset about stone chips from commuting amongst all these other people in their sh!t boxes that they didn't give a stuff about. Car parks and super markets used to cause me major distress.

It's simply not possible to run a car as a daily driver and keep it in show room condition. Put a few quid aside each month and get to know a good paint less dent removal and smart repair guy.

I was like this a couple of months back when I got mine. I'm less anxious now. However, I use my Polo for supermarkets and the like, usually. Generally quite careful where I take my Zed overall for the fear of other peoples' carelessness.

Thank God it is not my everyday car, especially when it comes to the daily errands! I still pay attention to everything when with the Z... where I park, who is next to me, is there proper parking where I am going! It's like doing homework everytime you are taking it out.

Ive given up being careful with mine now, these cars seem to atract scratches lol! If I park it in the most remote space in a car park, I guarantee when I come back a 4x4 is parked next to me. Just the other day I was parked down the beach minding my own business when a seagul drops a mussel on the bonnet of the car, believe it or not, denting it, so ive given up lol. Just enjoy the car!

I park far away, and on end bays... And walk a lot more now

Fear not. Those feelings will never leave you but do reduce in intensity. Advice is per the previous threads. I bought myself a 10 year old Golf for the shopping/tip trips so the Z is tucked up nicely until I need to get my fix.

Alternatively you could shop through the internet and stay home looking at your new car and waiting for it to be delivered.

In reality, if it's a nice day, it's silly to not drive the Zed for fear of shopping trolleys. A quick run to the store can end up being 2 towns over via the scenic route. You do what you can to keep it 'safe', beyond which it's out of your control. That's what I keep telling myself. Repeatedly. Constantly.

Sometimes, I can almost convince myself. So no, it doesn't go away, but you hopefully learn to manage it so it's not all consuming.

I am on my 2nd Z and no the fear does not go away. I parked door width away from someone just yesterday and they still got me. Luckly it was my lower panel which is getting replaced next week anyway along with having the nose and hood painted and touched up.

Regards

When @ supermarket car park, always park right down the other end where none of the fatties can be bothered to walk from.. then there is lots of space and you don't have to park next to anybody (not even other BMW drivers who have the same idea).

I find this is particularly the case at places like Morrisons, where they have invested in lots of spaces for Northerners etc. This is most useful for keeping ones' cravat clean, whilst also avoiding smeer marks on the Alpina.

Nope, never goes. Actually, it gets worse. Especially when someone defaces your car :x

I'm three years in... it never goes away. Always choose end spots, passenger side, plus covered at work. My wife and daughter have learned no passenger loading/unloading in the 2-car garage. Take the Volvo wagon out for daily grocery/Costco runs....
