So it's confirmed......I need a new alternator :-(

Not happy.

Went to two separate garages and called out the AA.

Voltage coming out of the current alternator is 11.3 volts with no gadgets running. Doom!!

Where is the best place to get a new one from and fitted.

Just got a shiver reading this. Must have changed the altenator on my old Nissan 100NX about 4 times. You sure its the alternator and not a bad earth connection? If its a new unit then its Stealer or Indy options. Definitely get quotes and try Lepsons BMW first. Not sure you can get modern units reconditioned but you never know.

Depending on the fault which is likely to be brushes or rectifier pack, the refurb process is simple with the right tools, the pro's get them through and bench tested in no time. I had an exchange unit on my SLK fitted for about £250, I'm guessing the Z4 will be similar. Rectifier and brush parts etc for a DIY job would probably be about £100 and presumes the bearings are OK.

Stealership prices will be a whole lot more :(

I'd see about getting it reconditioned - I just had mine done, on the 924.

The place I used (in Berkshire though) was very good, cost me about £100 inc vat.

Money well spent

Not sure how easy it is to remove the Z4 alternator though - at least you won't have to deal with a rusted on and slightly antiquated tensioner!

Full details: #Project924 - Breakdown: stop the charge…

how can i be truly sure its the alternator?

everything that has been tested points that way......i just hope its not some wiring issue......even though none of the wires have been played with.

It's been done already...
Test with a multi-meter. Ideally off the back of the alternator, otherwise on the battery, you should be getting a reading of around 14V. When you start getting below 12V you’ve got a problem. Oh, make sure the alternator belt is spinning

The volts were tested directly from the alternator :-(
The AA said there was a burning smell......i guess thats a bit of sign that its screwed... :-(

Picked up a new aftermarket one for £190....not too bad compared to BMW - £400 + £110 surcharge (refunded when i send back the old unit). :-o
