So how reliable is the Z4 sDrive?

Thanks Sars - interesting thread. I notice a host of people with water getting into rear light clusters. Condensation in the rear light was another minor point picked up in my pre-purchase inspection. I mentioned this today (in fact I gave the garage the report) and so I expect this to be fixed under warranty as well.

Shambolic - I have to ask: what are "dancing windows" :?

When you put the roof up. The windows go all the way up but them retract to half way down again, as though something was trapped in their path and wouldn't let them close fully.....

I ask the question not because I have any issues with my 3.0i - in fact I've owned it for less than a week - but rather because I've deserted Honda, a marque I've stuck with for over 15 years.

My previous car was an S2000 and I absolutely loved it. It was a completely different animal to the Z4 but was great to drive and in the 7 years I owned it the only thing to go wrong was the battery, which considering it was over 8 years old was entirely forgivable. Will I get the same wood-burning stove reliability from the Z4? I guess by reliability I'm not just talking about the "leaving you stranded at the side of a motorway" stuff but also the "things coming loose and falling off" (sounds painful) kinda reliability.

I'd appreciate the views of people who've owned their cars for a little longer than me...

We too came from an S2000 which didn't miss a beat in 4 years and the build quality was stunning. The Beemer has been great mechanically but bits have fallen off in the 8000 miles we've done since January. Front towing eye cover and 3 wheel centre badges(and counting)

I think to enjoy the Z4, I'll have to stop comparing it to the S2000. Honda don't regularly hit the no.1 / no.2 slot for reliability for no reason and providing my Z4 doesn't leave me stranded in the rain one day, which I'm sure it won't, then I'm sure I'll enjoy it every bit as much. One big difference is the torque: with the S2000, when I wanted to overtake I'd drop 2 or maybe even 3 gears. With the Z4 I just put my foot down. :D

Are you sure the wheel badges fell off? Or could they have been helped by pikey's?

Would have to be bloody fast Pikeys as it was on a lap of the Ring on hols. You can make out the missing centers on the front wheels

i have 9k and had 2 new gearboxes and a fuel pump, not sure if this is just bad luck or e89 is rubbish. never the less i do love to drive the thing

I have one of the promotional models, built May 2009, just north of 35,000 miles, most of them driven fairly hard (sporty) and a number of laps at Nurburg, as well as a custom Schmickler Performance tune and other than the documented software update in 2010, have had no issues.

Yep, could still be pikey's you know, they are like lightning!

How the hell did they fall out...I thought they were a bugger to remove unless pushing from behind?

Well, two fell out on one particularly hot lap. I can only assume the heat from the front brakes made the alloys expand at a greater rate than the hub center.

The other one fell out on Rach's daily commute at home.
