So how much is that service history worth?

I came across this whilst looking for a handbook pack for the Mother's Zafira as it was missing when I bought it from Motability last year..

THIS is why I like to see invoices for work done, as quite literally, the stamped book means nothing IMO...

Part of the reason I went for my car is the fully stamped book and the invoices in the previous owners name to back them up. An up to date service book is nice but it means a lot more when you have a folder of invoices to back it up

I suppose it depends on how it's worded - Such as "to replace your lost book" etc.

Mike

Yea but if that was the case you could post your new book to the dealer and they would stamp it - its a bit like me getting a new cheque book the same as yours and signing your signature for you.

If you had lost your 'main dealer' stampted service book then you could just ask them to print off a service history from the computer system I believe all main dealers are networked for a particular manufacturer now.

Supply of the book may be OK but surly the stamping with another dealers stamp is fraudulent.

Stupid BMW - still doesn't have electronic servicing history.

C63 didn't have a book - you ring Merc and any branch can print/email you the full history they hold.

Do they charge for that?

Can't believe BMW don't hold a "central database" Surely it's in their own interests, as it can tie people into the dealer network servicing?

Maybe they do now, but when I was making a warranty claim for a new engine, I had to drive to each of the dealers to get them to stamp my book.

I did ask why they couldn’t just check on a central database, but they said they didn’t have one, and each franchise ran their own.

The also didn’t recommend posting the service book, as they couldn’t guarantee not to lose it.

Blank service books have been knocking around for years but I've never seen them being sold with a dealer stamp, naughty but I guess its not illegal but I imagine it would be trying to sell a car with a fully stamped up book and falsifying the cars history, isn't that classed as fraud? Will have to check my M140, unsure it has a service book as I thought it went on the cars idrive these days and would get over falsifying the cars history to some extent.

Tim.

BMW do hold within their database information on any car that has been serviced at a BMW main dealer garage.

In order to get this information, you have to call up BMW customer services. (If you call up your local branch they will only be able to provide you with any servicing done on a particular car at that branch.)

F Series and newer BMW's the service history is now electronic and you don't even get a service book. You can request a book as I believe only BMW can update the car's on-board service history.

I'm sure BMW used to read my keys in the little key reader on the service desk. Am I confused....?

Also, if you look at the link Ducklakeview posted , it shows 143 SOLD !! So there are a lot of bogus books out there, some may be legit but 143 , no way!

The key holds basic information about the car including service due but doesn't hold the actual service history.

Depends on the model - Older Zeds with EWS 3/4 key systems only store the mileage and VIN. Later ones store more info.
