Snow

Drove the entire 1.5 miles home from work sideways with the traction control off! Great fun! :driving: :driving: :D

... then i got stuck wheel spinning in the snow when going over a speed bump about 20m from my garage, two friendly chaps pushed me the rest of the way! :oops:

...then I got stuck again, right outside my garage! Had to sweep away all the snow before I could get it in! I'm loving this snow!
 
I gotta tell you guys, I am getting a laugh out of this thread. Here in Snow Country, USA, we get 4-6 storms like you are seeing every year. I use Blizzacks in up to 6" when the Z4 turns into a snow plow and needs to be parked, and the 4X4 fired up. After 30 years of driving in the mountains, snow is never an issue, (up to about 6"). MOMENTUM is the key, NEVER use the power, but finesse only enough speed to keep rolling, and you'll look like Lewis Hamilton to the sideways drivers. Stopping and starting is DEATH. Keep rolling, don't spin wheels, and you'll get home....

Unless you are on performance dry weather skins, in which case you are pretty well screwed and should have stayed home....

I suspect the biggest threat are the thousands of OTHER drivers who don't get much seat time in snowy conditions...Z4 owners learn how to drive sideways in their first few hundred miles anyhow, so they know what to look for!

Job already done pal , roads were rough at times with 2-3cm snow through northern France in the early hours but we arrived safely & only had the odd twitch & scare :) think a lot was down to running the right tyre pressures :whistle:

Not much snow up on Dartmoor today. :cry:

Made up for it with 70mph winds and -22c wind chill though. :o

I loved it. :D Left the Zed at home though and took the Clio. Less to dig out. :wink:

600 miles. I'm impressed and more impressed because of the snow. I'm a crap long-distance driver.

I’m not suprised you laugh - Europe and Scandanavia must get the giggles as well. The UK gets a dusting and we grind to a halt . Most of the problem is folk insist on using the same tyres summer and winter then wonder why they get stuck and boast they can drive according to the conditions!

It's all very well you Europhiles giggling together, but I ain't spending 1500 of Her Majesty's good sovs on a set of wheels & winter tyres in case it snows in the East Midlands. In your actual Scandinavia, parts of which are above the Arctic Circle and have polar bears, they set their clocks by the first flakes of the white stuff and get good value out of their winter sets. Here, the highest-ranking country in the Winter Olympics that probably won't have snow most winters, it just ain't worth it.
 
A propos of not much, a Czech friend - not that I'm anti-Brexit, you understand - told me that in the Republic, if you have a car accident that's attributable to snow after a fixed date each year and are not using winter tyres, your insurance is invalid. Mmm, what fun the Euro-bureaucrats must have.
 
Except that winter tyres aren’t exclusively for snow, they’re cold weather tyres. Whether they’re worth having in the East Midlands is a separate issue.

Agreed, its pathetic. My wife is Moldovian, we frequently travel to Kiev/Moscow etc to visit relatives. In Moscow you can have several metres of snow and no-one bats an eyelid. You can jump on a train or a plane and get a bus to work. During one stay in Moscow the temperature swung from -32C over night to +14C in the sun the next day. It's literally crazy, you can hear birch trees 'exploding' as they freeze in the forests occasionally.
 
So there is some benefit to living North of Watford Gap? Here in Blackpool its been top down on Monday in the sun, slight snowfall on Tuesday night maybe half an inch or so but all gone by 3pm so top down again in the sun, top down again on Wednesday and Thursday and today its just been sunny but too windy to put the top down.

Anyway while i am enjoying driving around in the sunshine with the top down eating the best pies and pasties in the world please take care all of you that live in and around the worst hit areas of the UK. Listening to the members comments about driving in snow at least gives me reassurance that we know how to drive correctly but there are hundreds of others that struggle to drive in July and August but still insist on driving in these conditions. This is a big deal. Michelin has told me that their SS Pilots get "real greasy" when temps fall below 45 deg. F, due to their rubber compound being maximized for racing. In use, I have found that to be true. I could not take corners as fast with the summer tires once the track had cooled off, and my lap times showed it. Cost me about 5 seconds on a 2.5 mile track. Changed tires that night to winters and my times improved back to my normal mediocre level the next day.

Cold weather tires go on in October.

Mmm, there's some fine logic there - 'fine' in the sense of 'delicate' and 'not strong' - that might escape many people. :)
