Wow - Snow and DTC off does really = Sideways

Today, I thought, Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm, Z4 not so clever in the snow, will move mine out of the street and use the Corsa. Well I got my Z just out of the street, reversed out, put it into 2nd, DTC off for extra grip .... And accelerate .... Backwards we went.

Braked gently, not enough, still slidding, pumped the brakes, oh s**t we'r still sliding quite literally to a grass bank, oops ... down the grass bank we skidded ..... and onto the road, knocking the back wing off a parked 4x4 - Not a scratch of damage to the 4x4 as my Z clipped the bars that rund round their bumper but a lovely dint in my Z ... I reckon it's going to be a new back panel job

Knocked on the door, explained my Z had a mind of it's own with snow and well .... theres no damage to yours, but heres my insurance details anyway.

At this point I was stuck at the bottom of a street with a slight incline, and my Z was having none of it, Luckily the guy with the 4x4 seem the funny side and we used his to pull me out of the street.

In future I'm not even going to attempt to move the Z4 in the snow! It'll stay firmly whereever she is next time.

The only way I'd go out and play in my Z is if I had put on winter/snow tires. Fortunately, we also have an X5 and a Ford F-150 4WD pickup truck so the Z stays where she's at.

Ouch, better not to risk the Z4 in the snow. At least you had the decency to let the 4x4 driver know

Bad news about the Z4 though, you never know, it might come out with a PDR fix.

pics? orry to hear ur bad luck- my z is sat with 4 inches of snow on it- mate in a tt picked me up for work and even that was hairy!

Drove a couple of miles to the supermarket today, rear wheel drive with 340bhp is an interesting experience to say the least! Was doing ok until in the outside lane of a small dual carriageway doing 50, a lorry decided to undercut me doing about 70  Some of those guys have rocks in their heads....

Ouch - I feel for you on that one.
RWD, light body, wide tyres and powerful does not do well in snow and ice.

Bugger :(

Driving today, I thought the DSC *on* allowed far too much slip initially, before reigning in the throttle. Ie, if you are on an incline, it's crap, it'll let them spin, they get way past peak slip ratio, and then you are off :(
Personally I think DTC is to be used when you can't actually start to move because you need sustained drive to the wheels (ie, no throttle cut), rather than trying to constantly optimise traction, which I think, once it's started, DSC does alot better (after it slips a bit at first)

Like several here, I'm considering some 17's and all-season tyres just for the worst weeks in the UK, handy spares too.

I hope you get everything sorted as smoothly as possible!

Dave

Ouch, not good to hear about the impact. The 4x4 owner sounds like a decent bloke though.

I too am thinking about a set of 17s and some winter tyres. If I'm intending keeping my Zed for a while, it might just be worth it. A mate has a set of winter tyres/wheels for his Scooby and the difference is remarkable.

In my 330 ZHP I always had to turn off the "dynamic driving aids" in the snow or risk getting stuck - It's proper function has nothing to do with driving in the snow. BTW - Yokohama AVS Winters were brilliant on that car!

I disagree.... I only have narrow 17's on mine granted but it was excellent in the snow. I took it to work today over the 1 series diesel purely because the turbo causes all sorts of problems. DSC was off on the way home as I was sick of the light and the grip is phenomenal.

I would suggest you practice throttle control etc. Certainly for me today, the Z4 was excellent.

With good performance winter tires it's quite bearable driving in the snow. I had Bridgestone Blizzak LM-25 on my MC and I never any problems. Of course, driving extra carefully is always recommended. :)

Try driving a VX220 in the snow! No weight on the front & RWD (Mid engine)

In my Polo Shed I ended up behind a Z4 last night, it was only doing around 15mph so a couple of cars infront of me had overtaken it until I was right behind it. It took a corner so wide that a 4x4 had to mount the pavement to stop a head on collision!

I was watching it struggle to stay within the white lines on a straight road and when he approached a left hand bend he virtually went straight on!! Luckily the 4x4 driver had seen him in time!

...And i was looking forward to having a car I could use in all weathers  :P

I see the snow is bad everywhere then!

It's not great weather to be taking the Z4 out but it's nowhere near as bad as i thought it would be.

I took a few pictures when i got home from work last night...

I think us southerners got more snow than you northerners for a change :D

Shame about the bash though mate, once a car goes of in a direction and you cant stop it theres always an OH SH1t moment!
