Snow Tyres Question

 Co, Durham.
Hi folks mate of mine has a 1 series and is thinking of snow tyres can you put them on the driven wheels only or is there much to be gained with them on all the wheels ???

They should be on all 4 wheels. Better braking and steering control as well as handling.

Putting just two snow tires on your car is a bad idea. If you have a front-wheel-drive car and put snow tires on the front only, the back wheels won't have anywhere near as much grip as the front wheels. This will make the car much more likely to spin out while braking or cornering. Likewise, if you put snow tires on the just back wheels of a rear-wheel-drive car, the wheels that do the steering won't grip as well as those that provide the power, so the car may not respond when the steering wheel is turned -- it will simply plow straight ahead. Always install snow tires as a full set of four.

Remember there's a difference between snow tyres (even studless ones) and winter tyres, he probably needs to be looking for winters rather than snows.

As for the 2 vs 4 argument, look what happened when somebody (andyps) stated that intention on pistonheads:

I see what you mean Rich by Pistonheads, all 4 wheels have snow tyres not studed ones so i think they are classed as winter tyres. For the cost of under £200 it might just be the difference of getting stuck or a trip into another car or even worse :thumbsup:
 
I completely misread this - I read it as snow CHAINS ...
