Snow Socks

As i've have two rear wheel drive cars (Z3 & Z4) i have ordered a set of Halfords Universal snow socks.
Handy as the "L" size fits both tyre sizes: 245/40 R 17 and 255/30 R19.

Personally never been stuck in the snow after 40 years on the road, only problem has been with buses getting stuck
and other car users abondoning their cars. There are only steep hills to get out of Folkestone & Hythe when i need to get to work.

Anyone else used them ? I'm and snow sock virgin

Thats the issue, used twice in ten years. Why not just by a cheap set of these and stick them in your boot in case you get stuck.

Yup, the OP is in Kent and is talking about getting up a hill in the highlands of Folkstone. I look at winter wheels for my X5, every November, for the last ten years. I still haven't bought them. But the point I was trying to make (badly) was the Halfords socks are 60 quid. It would need a bad winter as you rightly said to get real use of them. Those Amazon things were 12 quid and would probably still get the OP up the hill if needed in an emergency. I am a wimp and use SORN socks in the winter.

Getting stuck isn’t nearly as bad as not being able to stop! For that reason it’s winter tyres for me.
A set is cheaper than the iinsurance premium increase.

I bought a set (for all 4 wheels) in 2008 when I bought the car. They've been in the boot, unopened since then, as I've not been anywhere that I've needed them.

Those zip ties look like a sure way to scratch and mark your alloys.

Problem with them is you can only use them on snow so if you hit any tarmac they have to come off, plus trying to get a sock on a 18 inch wet and freezing cold tire with minimal arch gap at the side of the road isn't a pleasurable experience unless immune to frost bite. I ended up fitting all season tires to my Z3 which were brilliant in deep snow and ice and a much better compromise.

Probably never use them but for that price they can just live in the boot of which ever car I'm driving all winter long. Along with my snow shovel. That did get used last year.

I put winter tyres on my E46 for the last 3 winters, and never really needed them. But it was good to know it would be usable if we had got any snow. I paid £180 for them and sold them for £125 after 3 winters - seemed like a bargain to me, and you don't wear your regular tyres out as quickly!

I replaced it with an E91 in March, just in time for the Beast from the East! No problem though - it came fitted with winter tyres! (Although I did have to find a set of summers). :roll:

All the time my daily is a BMW it'll get winters - my 1 Series was hopeless back in 2010 & 2011.

But my Z4 stays at home when the weather gets that bad. :lol:

Kent can get pretty bad from time to time when the weather is coming from the North-East.

We do get snow down here in tropical Kent.
My commute to work is up and over the White Cliff's of Dover the hills are long and steep :wink:
