I wanted to change my 103s anyway so Im just gonna get a set of budget winters put on for £85 a corner fitted, then keep them as winter spares.Bad_Pritt said:

spend the winter tyre/wheel money on a winter shed 4x4 and keep your Z safe from all the other mouth breathers that dont understand the concept of ice/snow and grip levels.

2 worst cars ive had in the snow are boxster S. couldnt get up the driveway, exige s2 (semi slick tyres....), i know a few people who run a nice car, and have a winter shed to keep the salty muck away and since then it has to be horses for courses. Nice winters day the Z will be out, but snow/rain/muck it can stay in the garage. As rubbish as the Z will be on the road, I'm not worried about me, its everybody else! i thought about winter tyres on previous cars but it prevent people crashing into you....
Regardless of tyre choice, the amount of tread makes a big difference too. Bald winter tyres won't help much compared to brand new winters.
Most importantly drive with anticipation. Leave a big gap to the car in front, one you can stop in on ice not one you can stop in on a hot summer's day. Not a winter tip, but watch the traffic half a dozen or more cars ahead as well as those right in front. If they start to brake it's only logical you'll be needing to slow down very soon. It's difficult in the South I know but it's possible to go significant distances without ever needing to come to a halt and start moving off again (even in stop start traffic or journeys covering multiple junctions) by watching the traffic ahead and by timing your approach to junctions/roundabouts so there's always a gap when you arrive.

Anyone know a cheap place to get some cheap winter wheels and tyres then? Looking around on the net quickly, best I can do is go down to 17 inch wheels, but we're still talking £700+ inc budget winter tyres.. £900+ if you step to reasonable brand tyres... ow! Still seems better to walk/take the bus lol.. I only work 4 miles from where I live.

they work and I wouldn't put weights in the back because the tail out fun is too good to ruin.
Oh the tail will still slide with some deliberate provocation, despite winter tyres and extra weight, so fun can still be had - it is the unprovoked tail-happiness that I want to try and avoid at this time of year... Scary
As for other drivers - hmm. Fair point, but to be honest I am not sure there's any less risk at any other time of year down here. Just drive with care... And if it was really bad I couldn't go out in it anyway - too low
