After a 60 mile round trip to the only dealer in the north-west that had one, I've found out it doesn't fit in the socket in the e85/e86 - despite being told otherwise by BMW.

It almost fits, except the new 'side entry' power/function socket means the extra lobe on the adapter won't go past the frame.

Tried it on lots of other cars at the showroom and it fits 9 out of 10 - even the new e89 Z4.

So it won't fit without cutting out a small (3cm) slot in the frame (exactly where that useless flap is - on the opposite side to where you stick a pen).

i've been considering a snap in adapter but they all look like they are for older phones, am i wrong?

at the moment i have a samsung, but i'm due to upgrade, i'm open to suggestion as long as its a nice small phone i'll consider anything

Depending on which of the 3 'bases' you have, the current list of adapters available is here.

I'm just going to keep my old K800 in the car and swap the sim over when I need to receive calls whilst driving. Bit of a pain as I usually forget to take the phone out of the car when I got to work as it is.

why do you need to use a snap in anyway ?

mine seems fine without it... :?

Because you have to have bluetooth enabled to receive calls and it drains the battery unless you've got it plugged into the adapter to keep it chrged. If I'm on my normal 8-hour 'fun-day' drives my phone dies before I'm finished driving. It also helps when I'm doing 3 days marshalling and camping, as I don't have to carry any power supplier with me.

you obviously take more calls than I do - bluetooth enabled constantly, phone lasts about a week (c905) - admittedly less if used in the car with TomTom contacting it for traffic updates etc.

I just have a car charger wired up in the glovebox - little faff :D

I've got a P1i and would love a snap in if I knew it fit. It's the newer type of SE PSU socket, so seems likely.

But this is just for completeness, I too just use one from the glovebox.

Getting my new Blackberry Curve adaptor tomorrow, I too have issues with batteries on multi day trips.

How do you wire one in the glovebox? Take a power feed from somewhere?

kinda hard to describe... I have one of those extensions for your cigarette lighter socket which turns it into 3 sockets and a USB power socket. The bulky end is in the glovebox and the wire is threaded through behind the dash and under the switch panel on the centre console into the bin area - I have also plugged all my chargers (Phone x 2, TomTom, ipod lead) into the extension in the glovebox and routed all those leads back the same way to the bin area. Having removed the bin trim I can leave the plug for the extension under the console and tuck all the wires away under the closing hatch for when not required. When required just plug in the extension plug in the cigarette socket and whatever I need charging

Could take some photos if people are interested?

Guess you could also take a power feed from somewhere...
