Smoother roads in the north? (England, UK)

I took the car to visit some people around Lancashire over the weekend and spent a fair bit of time driving around local and major roads. I found the roads much smoother and easier on the car - didn't find myself complaining about tramlining or harsh driving at all, and my wife agreed too. Much better than the usual drive in the South East.

Has anyone else noticed this?
 
Yes. Wales has great roads too. Now, I wonder where our tax money is spent? North England and Wales, Labour heartlands. :?
 
without a shadow of a doubt where i live in staffordshire has the roughest bumpiest roads in the uk absolutley a disgrace, due to all the mining we have a lot of subsidence i drive into cheshire to go to work and the roads are a lot beter!

oh yeah i forgot to say COME ON STOKE!!!!!!

You wouldn't be saying that if you drove round pothole city (Sheffield)
 
Well the M6T is real smooth, but then again it's £4.50 a drive on it.

A38 is so tramlined you find the odd Fiat Panda in the bottom of some ruts...

Guess I'm not far enough North or West
 
Roads are really bad down here in Surrey - I can always tell when Im getting near to home. The bumps and shakes wake my wife up!
