Hi all, I have another problem to add to my bloody long list now. My car has been sat for the last 3 weeks because unfortunately I had a little injury (pic below but hope you're not squeamish)

I've driven it twice now in the last 3 days and on both occasions I have had heavy smoke coming from the engine bay until the car has warmed up, it is white smoke and it smells plasticy but I can see anything down there that looks like it could be causing it on the exhaust, any ideas?

Oh and the arm:

Rocker cover gasket is leaking oil down onto the exhaust which is getting burnt off. Common place for them to go back there as there is less cooling at the back of the engine so the gasket goes brittle sooner.

Thats exactly where my rocker cover gasket was dropping oil onto the heatshield above the manifold.

Had this on one of my other cars a few years ago only the smoke was under the car. Turned out that a carrier bag had blown up under the car and stuck itself to the exhaust. Might be worth checking :)

For those of you that are interested the arm is now good and healing well but unfortunately need another operation because the radial nerve isn't repairing and my hand is still very twitchy, the cutaneous nerve is repairing slowly but still have no feeling on the majority of my hand except a burning sensation. This happened because I threw a ball for the dog in the garden and slipped, put my arm back to break my fall and it went straight through the glass on our back door. Unfortunately it turned out not to be safety glass.

The car seems to have stopped smoking so may have been something stuck to the exhaust so now I just have to make a new gear for my seat back gearbox where my GF stripped it with an umbrella sat on the switches when she got out of the car!! Think I may have to get rid of the GF as she cant seem to stop damaging my bloody car!

Non safety glass? That is shocking ... Is it a very old house or so?

That was some serious arm damage ...

The gf - that is another story altogether ...

Yes its a very old house and we were not aware it was non safety glass, it has now all been replaced with laminated glass, the original glass was only 2mm thick and not laminated! I know the law changed in 1978 so the door and back windows were older than that! I have to say though it didn't look that old.

I was very lucky with my arm because had I dragged down my main artery as far as the cut was I would have lost my hand or even worse bled out. Also lucky that I missed my tendons etc but the nerve damage is still very painful.

The girlfriend crashed the damn car into a house only around 6 weeks ago too!

Glad the arms back together again - like you say could have been far worse - hope it all settles down eventually.

Oh and hope you get your Zed sorted out - about time you had a bit of good luck!

:driving:
