Hi Guys

3.0i MSport Highline

Does anyone know if smoked rear lights were an OEM option when configuring the car or did this version of car have smoked rear lights as standard?

Thanks guys for reading my post.

AFAIK, smoked lights were never fitted to any Z4 E89.

Thanks B21, I did wonder, there are a few manufacturers offer smoked rear lights as an option, I noticed Magnetti Morelli OEM supplier offering these on Parts 4 Less website, Im looking to replace the rear lights due to water ingress

Forgive the intellectually impaired Marcoose, his lack of education in both the English language and engineering are major impediments to any useful dialogue with said being.

So on the lights there was a major break between the early 3 stud lights that popped onto their mountings with 3 push studs, they were replaced around 2011/12 ish with a two stud mount that placed less stress on the outer corner where they tend to delaminate and then let water in from their joins.

Later revisions on the inside had extra clamping screws to hold down the back of the rear light access covers and their rubber seals.

The seal could compress and some folks say the seals themselves are permeable.

The latest versions have these extra screws positively clamping the rear light access cover rather than just having plastic clips.

You should see somewhere on the unit some stickers indicating manufacturing date..anything post 2015 should be ok.

If you buy from a reputable UK supplier then it should be fine..Euro Parts have offers on these from time to time.

Thank you very much B21, thats superb, really informative I have to say, looking at the pics its a big improvement, I guess I shouldn't be surprised…..I do hope that eventually the Germans realise that inferior and cheap parts from other manufacturer’s outside of Germany is compromising the hard earned reputations of their car manufacturers, its a false economy the warranty claims must be enormous…..thanks again B21

if myou have the 3 stud versions you'll need to blank off the redundant 3rd hole..gaffer /duct tape worked for me.. :tumbleweed:

Italy supplies a lot of electrics for cars, we thought Lucas was bad.
Think even the folding roof was Italian designed.

Even though i glued up my cars lamp seals, today i noticed condensation in the top corner of one lamp.

I have had over the years quite a few Beemers, and watched with some concern the gradual slide in terms of quality, its a general observation really but one that concerns me…,,,made in China….,ffs…,,,Siemens went to China and the rubbish that was sent bearing the Siemens name was frighteningly bad

In my experience the tide is turning in regard to Chinas QA on goods produced professionally. Not talking about AliExpress junk.
Apple have pretty much their entire products based there now. Kia and Hyundai are leading the EV development race and also battery tech.
We are seeing a slow creep towards a single global superpower in trade and production. Once we are all dependent on China (arguably we already are) then they can pretty much do whatever they like!
The way they are achieving this via human rights abuses is a good example. The world knows it’s going on, no one challenges China though because we all need what this abuse creates.
Sad and dangerous world we are creating….

I totally agree Mark, and I think the EU are following the same principle, the make work for all of its people idea, hence the decline in german manufacturing which was arguably the envy of the world….very very dangerous like you say Mark

There is a difference between reputable companies like e.g. Apple who engineer and design their own products but have them assembled in China under their strict requirements and a product which is designed or copied and made in china by some unknown firm.
