Smoke from filler cap

I'm lost then as to what it can be, so yeah, I'm just going to book it in. Thing I'm worried about is the amount that 'exploratory' investigations will cost...

If there is a problem then all you will pay is the £100 excess. Like I said have a chat with the service dept they generally are quite good. Take it in, show them and they'll tell you if its 'normal' or not. They don't always agree they need to take it in and look at it.

Emmmm, just thinking you own a 23i don't you? There has been a couple of guys with issues with their engines. I assume you didn't check the problem section?

I assume you've had no 'noises' from the engine? Someone engine went at 21k on a 61 plate.

Ok. Car is booked in next Tuesday. I'm expecting 'we checked it out sir and couldn't find anything'. Still, 2l of oil since October ain't normal!!!

Ok so got the car back today. Feedback was that there is nothing wrong with the car and that 1l of oil per 1000miles is normal. I say that's bullshit - no modern engine should use that.
I've told them that I want it on record that this was raised under warranty, because if it gets worse and I have no warranty, I won't be bloody paying to fix it!!!

That is hefty oil usage. Even with cars that are renowned for using oil (Audi RS4 etc), that is high.

You've done the right thing to get them to note it. Its high oil usage, something you'd expect of a very high mileage car. The N54 for example is known to use some oil yet other than major servicing the only time I had to top it up was at around 6000 miles which you might expect to due to run-in and everything bedding in/sealing up nicely.

Try not to obsess about it/don't let it ruin the car for you. So long as it all works, its just the way it is.
