SMG stutter

When pulling off from a stop I am noticing a stutter and sometimes it occurs in 2nd gear at low RPM's before changing into 3rd. I'm not sure the technical details of SMG (just an overview understanding), but is it possible the clutch may be going out (89k miles)? The SMG shows no other signs of problems, the pump seems to still work the same as always and I have never had any warnings. After the car has been running a while the problem seems to go away... any thoughts? I searched the forum, but the only guy with similar problems didn't get an answer. I'm wondering if any other SMG owners have had this happen and have an answer.

Stupid question but - are you using the paddles to change gear or leaving the SMG in "D"rive?
I think if the gearbox oil is cold, and you try and change gear via the paddles, with less than 2k revs then you get a pause/ hesitancy.
Although the gearbox oil is quoted as being "sealed for life" - replacing it - may resolve the problem. I have not done this but it seems to be one of the remedies on the other BMW forums. Otherwise perhaps get a Diagnostics check?

I change the gears myself, but even leaving it in 'auto' doesn't clear the problem. The stutter in first comes before a gear change, it is just launching from stop...

For some reason I didn't think the gearbox oil was sealed for life on SMG but I had been considering that. No diagnostic codes are being thrown but it probably needs to go to the shop to be safe.

Update- reset adaptive throttle and whatever else that resets and the problem went away for a few days, seems to be slightly returning. Maybe this isn't the gearbox at all? Any other ideas?

I have the SMG box in mine and I experience a similar thing; it's a kind of "judder" from the clutch. In mine it occurs at the point of the clutch biting (i.e. moving from a slipping situation to a fully-engaged one), so it's normally in 1st when pulling away, or 2nd if i've slowed down and then pull away before changing down (i.e. at a junction). Does this sound like your experience?

I believe it's fairly common, and mine's certainly been doing it for at least the last 25k miles without exhibiting any other signs of the clutch slipping, so my guess is that it's just down to the SMG control of the clutch.

Have a check of these threads guys:

Hi Markos, Those links are a good find. And the info makes sense to me. Wonder if it is possible to carry out the same procedure on a Zed?

Hi Banbury, do you mean the dealer resetting/recalibrating the system? I'm sure they can do. Worth a manual reset first (on an M3 pulling both paddles in neutral for a few seconds) to see if that helps. Mine stuttered after changing rear tyres and I later realised the owners' manual states a manual reset ought to be done after fitting new tyres...
