smg stalled?

i have an smg tranny. it stalled for the first time today. i'm not really worried about it only because i just turned the car back on and i took it for a test run and she ran just fine.

question is.... why the stall??

Could be the clutch is about done. Could be the way the throttle was modulated on take off that confused the computer for a split second but enough to stall the car. My '04 SMG installed 3~4 times during the year I had it. SMG technically isn't suppose to stall, but it's also not unheard of. It happens to the E46 M3's SMG2 as well.

Mine never stalled in 2.5 years - a couple of times I sensed it almost did on hill starts, however, the computer would catch it.

the previous owner of my car warned me about this, told me it happened to him twice in the 3 years he owned the car.

alright.. so i guess it seems to be a benign issue from the looks of it.

1. Make sure the SMG control unit has the most recent software. The early (2003 and very early 2004) models had some software issues, which are fixed by an update.

2. Have you read about the Vanos seal failure issue? That would be my first guess.
