SMG Issues

Hi Guys,

I was a member over at Z4um and now I'm here!

I have a 3.0 Z4 with SMG..... I have had it since January and I have a couple of issues with it....

If I change gear above 4.5k revs in 1, 2 i.e from 2nd to 3rd *without a throttle lift) the box jumps in neutral.... Has anyone else expereinced this?

Secondly at light throttle loads the clutch now appears to slip when engaging 3rd from 2nd......

Has anyone any expereince of this and BMW's response?

The first problem nearly killed us on Wednesday night - overtaking a slow lorry on the A17 - pulled out in 2nd, went for 3rd and then the box jumped to neutral - much to the delight of the driver coming the other way! :x

Thanks,

Paul

Hi Paul I remember you from Z4um

No idea about the car unfortunately, mate - the dealer will be able to look up fault codes for you though, hopefully before the car kills you with it's erratic behaviour :o

Mike,

It's going in on Wednesday - but you never know what rubbish you get from stealers....

It's not that it is erattic - I normally allow for it but it had been a long day and we were putting the hammer down to get to our B&B and I just forgot! Won't forget in a hurry again.....

Once it goes to neutral, do you need to manually force it back into a gear, will it stay there forever?

Mike,

It stay's in Neutral for what seem's like an age - but in reality is 5 to 10 seconds, then I have to select a gear and it goes into 6th.

6th being really useful at 50mph!

Sounds no good eh? Maybe the clutch is getting worn out, and the SMG electronics are trying to protect what's left of it? Like you say, not what you want whilst overtaking.

Welcome to the forum BTW!!

What year car do you both have?

Well it's been in today and was told it was fixed.......

Well.....

It now doesn't jump out of gear, but if you rev it up to 6k and then change gear it waits for the rev's to drop down to 4k before it changes up, so basically there is a two second hole between gears - not good!

1st to 2nd is now good - 2nd to 3rd has this hole. If you switch sport off you get a good change between 2nd and 3rd at full load.... weird.

I'll have to talk to them again tomorrow.

Paul

Have you got the latest software on it? Some dealerships are notoriously bad for fixing an issue but not being pro-active and making any due updates.

Update...

New clutch being fitted today......

But now they say the dual mass flywheel in broken too, so they will fit ine tomorrow......

Good news then Paul, although frustrating that your car is away from you, at least they're picking up the bill, and it should be perfect when you get it back.
