SMG Help

Quick update, as i took the day off last week

Re-checked fuses 9 and 32 to ensure they were OK. Reseated
Reseated 'salmon' relay under bonnet.
Disconnected battery for 15 minutes
Read and cleared all error codes (P0701)
Lifted car onto axle stands, but couldnt get under enough to identify fluid reservoir

I still cannot hear the pump prime when unlocking the car, this is a concern for me

At the moment im looking at options to recover the car on a low loader and get it to a garage.

Big thanks to Mac for spending the time to give me tips through PM, and everyone who has given me a little hope and stuff to try

Cheers

Be interesting to hear what the problem/fix is when you find out. Please keep us posted! :)

I will indeed, ive got a busy month ahead so may be next month when i get round to sorting this!

Thanks again all

Hello

So this weekend I finally plucked up the courage to get my Z4 into the garage. I initially decided to send it direct to BMW due to the nature of the fault

They've called me today to let me know the hydraulic pump has indeed failed and the replacement part is £3000. THREE THOUSAND POUNDS!!!

I can't believe the price of the part alone. Does anyone have any advice on this? I'm now facing the genuine possibility of having to scrap the thing

Cheers

Can't really help much other than to suggest trying to avoid BMW and hunt down a good transmission specialist or even hydralic pump spcialist etc who might be able to get a replacement or a recon done somewhere.

Failing that then I would suggest to try looking into getting a manual box with the selector mech/ clutch hydralics from a breaker etc to do a conversion. However I've no idea how feasible that would be to do.

Hi McDade. The whole hydraulic unit consists of quite a few separate parts and indeed this would cost in the region of £3k. :( However just the hydraulic pump itself is approximately 'only' £330 :) . If I was you I would phone around a few independent BMW specialists; of which there are quite a few on Google, and see what they advise. If you can get it into a good indy and they can be more accurate and pinpoint the specific faulty part/s then it may 'only' cost you a few hundred pounds to fix it.

Another vote for an indie. Should be able to quote for just a replacement part and not a whole host of other unnecessary parts.

Failing that maybe keep on the lookout for a SMG being broken?

I know a good indie between notts an derby, or Andy fanshawe who's done the project zed restoration might fancy a crack at it, Andy is in chesterfield, obvious problem is getting car to either , but might be worth talking to them

you could also try ECU Testing and see if they can help. But before spending big get an indie or better still bmw specialist to properly look at the faults codes

I can recommend Auto Trans Gloucester. I am sure he does SMG work from when he gave me a tour of his facility a few years ago. They do everything in house and it's like an operating theatre. Main dealers send him cars! He took my 1971 BMW 3HP12 box and completely rebuilt it with new old stock parts.

Worth a call maybe.

Hello everyone, long time no speak.

As my Z has been off the road now for over a year, I've not spent a huge amount of time here.

I do have some potentially good news for me, but maybe for others experiencing this kind of issue.

As it transpires, the SMG hydraulic unit (BMW PN: 23427507163) is made up of a number of components, including the motor that is at fault (BMW PN: 23427571297). Apparently BMW do not make the individual motor and will only sell in a bundle, hense the £3000 bill.

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=BT52-EUR-03-2003-E85-BMW-Z4_30i&diagId=23_0960#23427571297

I've since been in contact with a Germany company (www.smgsociety.com) who sell the motor individually OEM for around £200, with a guide DIY replacement.

I will be taking the existing motor out in the next two weeks with a view of testing this. Touch wood this is the faulty part, and there is now some light at the end of the tunnel for my Zed.

Thanks

I took the motor apart last week and rejuvenated it. Might be worth a try to prove it is the motor. See here https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=106752

I remember from your post before, what process to gain access? Is it similar to the M3? Driver's side wheel / front control arm sort of area?

No , it's underneath the gearbox. There is a heat shield to remove and then a cover plate. That's the easy bit. The pump is on a a bracket with torx screws that are fiddly to get at. The motors earth cable is also fiddly - I changed it later for a hex bolt. The positive cable unclips from the mount and pulls apart. The pump pulls off the expansion tank that needs a container to catch the fluid. My system had no pressure in it - you can check with INPA. There are 2 screws holding the pump onto the motor. The tabs on the motor can be bent back to take it apart. I couldn't find exactly the same size brushes so I bought bigger and ground down to size. I cleaned the comm in a lathe with fine emery and replaced the brushes and re assembled. The hydraulic parts weren't disassembled and so when I reassembled and topped up the expansion tank it all worked.
