SMG hard gearing and slipping.

Hi all!

Just bought myself an 2005 e85 3.0i with SMG transmission and 100k kilometers (my dream came true). Only thing killing me is the hard gearing from the SMG. Since i never driven car's with SMG before i'm not really familiar with this, but i know something is wrong.

So... its like there is a big slack underneath the car. For every gear change there is this hard violent "klunk" noise. My first tough was broken differential or bad bushings someplace, but i went to my local dealer and got the car up in air. Seems like diff is good and everything linked with the driveline. Then we startet the car and set it to D and instantly to R. There is a pretty harsh klunk coming from the gearbox and its seems like slack in drivetrain. What could be the cause? Sound stays the same between every gear and is of course harder when bringing the pedal to the floor. The mechanic also tried the car on highway but couldn't identify the problem. Only that the sound is from gearbox/clutch... It shifts pretty quick also and doesn't miss gears.

Last thing that happened, i was showing the car to my friend and drove pretty hard. Then when i was charging out from an intersection the clutch slipped. First it was spinning the wheels, but then second gear came and i noticed high rpm without the car moving. then the smell of burnt clutch came... Isnt this the same gearbox they use on m3's? i only got 231hp and its slipping?... Why?...

And there is no specialist on SMG gearboxes where i live... To get a specialist i need to travel to another country (i'm in middle Norway)
Could it be worn out splines? worn out gearbox? is it some bearing or somthing?

The Z4 has a SSG gearbox and not the same as M3. It shouldn't clunk like that. The gearbox is a manual gearbox that is controlled by servo /hydraulics as is the clutch. The clutch operation should be a smooth take up when setting off and changing gear. Sounds like the clutch is not engaging smoothly via the hydraulic system or the clutch or release bearing itself is no good.
 
First thing is to have the clutch bite point reset, as the clutch wears it obviously changes and the ecu needs to re learn it.

Don't you loose some oil ? there is some problem with the seals

so you should check them... change them if you see some oil and change the oil of the gearbox too...

Tnx for reply. Will definitely check clutch. Probably a good place to start.

I have been looking for this feature since I bought the car. I've read on forum's "how to" but nothing seems to work... besides everyone says different things 😅. Is it suppose to say how in my owners manual? It's in German so I don't understand :(

so you should check them... change them if you see some oil and change the oil of the gearbox too...

The car is completely free for oil spots. Been looking with flashlight in all corners under and in the engine
 
How do I reset the adaptive part of the smg? Oil change is coming up, but I can't find "how to" reset. This is probably the problem. After all the plates must be worn after 60k miles and 12 years... and the smg has never been reset.
 
for me the best thing is to make the reset with a "computer"... the procedure I found on the net seems to be for M3.
